Trying to narrow down distributions to switch to.Gentoo, but can I live with rolling releases?Debian, but can I live with petty dictators?Alpine, but can I live with constantly wondering if something is broken because it's broken or because of musl? (same for Chimera)NixOS or Guix, but I don't want an indirection between editing configuration and the actual configuration read by each program.Hey, is crux still alive?

@emmy For me rolling release distros end up not being as big of a problem; aside from frequent version bumpings most of them has rather conservative policies on how their distro is run(At the very least Arch and Gentoo seems to be in this camp)

@emmy But as far as install-time config goes Gentoo is definitely very intense; I remember them leaving such things like default CPU governor settings to the user, for one

There's a rust crate called crux and it's polluting the search results for the distribution. 💀But I don't think I want to use crux. The documentation seems to be lacking. And I still haven't decided if I want to leave systemd.So also alpine and chimera are out.

@emmy to make a case for chimera, it’s set up to give you a lot of the nice stuff youd get out of the Systemd Experience. it makes a lot of use of user services and dbus for example (and some tools taken from the systemd project generally). ive found writing dinit service files really straightforward.

@fiore@brain.worm.pink @emmy@transfem.social i'd very much like to use chimerabut the arch initramfs' in my ESP really confuses initramfs-tools ​:neobot_woozy:​and sadly there's neither other initramfs generators for chimera nor a way to tell initramfs-tools to put it's stuff in a different directory :(

It's down to Gentoo or Debian. I'm only aware of Debian drama because of LWN, but I don't know if Gentoo has the same problems.What's the governance structure for Gentoo? Can a single package maintainer derail the whole distribution because of his strongly held opinion?

@navi@social.vlhl.dev Is there an equivalent of Fedora's Change Process? Basically every major change requires a proposal, discussion, and FESCO approval. So Fedora developers are used to having to advocate for their positions and won't become defensive if someone disagrees with them.The impression I have of the Debian process is that disagreements only reach a wider audience (let alone the TC) after things get bad.

@emmy note that it's going to be less talk about changing things because often enough gentoo just, supports both -- via useflags and profiles and suchit's also why our docs are a bit of a mess, so much variation is officially supported here where in other distros it isn't
