@davidrevoy I like the higher resolution and ease of reading, but it’s so weird to flip through 4 panels on the app in mobile. I only see 1 and a sliver of another. I’m also excruciatingly lazy, so yeah 1 image of 4 panels is better for me at the moment.

@davidrevoy I‘d say, it should be the artists choice - if you have panels which really need many details, split the panels. If the „overall impression“ of the panels seem very important - one image with all panels. Or maybe mix it up?

@davidrevoy on reddit i've seen a lot of artists first have the panels as individual image, and then another picture with all of them combined.. though won't work with mastodon as that has a 4 images limit per post and even if you post from e.g. misskey the mastodon ui cuts off at the 4th with no indication that there's more :neofox_woozy:

@lina Good to know about Miskey; I had no idea the Mastodon UI was trimming the pictures count if above 4. That sounds bad, because if a comic artist on Miskey post a story in 6 panels and his client allows it on the Fediverse, it's a shame that Masto UI ruins the story and trim it...

@davidrevoy I like the idea of several pictures, so I don't have to zoom and pan. But after trying it here, I realize that I really like to see the comic laid out in frames, getting the comic book feel. And that outweighs removing the zoom/pan issue for me.

@davidrevoy I think that splitting the comic into its individual panels changes the nature of the comic somehow; this is related, of course, to the fact that clients will often crop the individual images when displaying them as a grid but mostly that a comic displayed as individual panels is a slideshow; the simultaneity of the format gets lostIs that a compelling argument? Probably not, it's fairly personal, I think. May I suggest posting the comic twice, once split and once as a whole?

@davidrevoy it’s not for me, mainly because it would just be so difficult to share in another context (e.g. in chat with a friend) as four individual panels. @davidrevoy I believe there’s a slight mistake in the alt text for the third panel. The alt text reads:Panel 3. The adventurer kneels down near the fairy and scarab, really curious now. The fairy is super happy and exited. > Adventurer: "A moment like this comes only once in a lifetime! Please, please, please, let me try!" > Pink-fairy: "Mmm.. Ok. Why not."The pink-fairy, not the adventurer, is the one saying “please please please let me try”.I guess the lines were inverted by the pink fairy herself, in an attempt to hide her responsibility in what happened in the 4th panel… ;)

@dgouttegattat Oh! :blobcatheart: Thank you for reporting this one before I "git commit" it to the repo. Too much rewrite made me blind to this I guess. Yes, in a previous version he asked in this panel "and what's happen if we roll a twenty?" and then the Pink-fairy was giving the peasant/lord line, but then the room in the panel while drawing was missing so I refactored it.

@burningbecks Thank you for the feedback, it must have been a challenge to understand the comic in reverse; you probably thought I was going very into a contemporary way of storytelling 😅 Probably 5 years ago or more, I posted a test about sorting of pictures; and it was totally random for many clients on Fediverse. I somehow assumed that in 2026 the order would be preserved across the Fediverse; but I see there is no warranty about this. Precious feedback. Thank you. :blobcatheart:

@davidrevoy hmm... 4 in 1 does feel more like a comic. Even on a regular smartphone. Having all panels in a single frame also allows for staying creative with the frames. Here's an example from your work: https://www.peppercarrot.com/io/viewer/misc__2016-08-16_comic-page_from-A-to-Z_tutorial_by-David-Revoy.html My eyes naturally follow the throwed ring path :)

@pedramardakani Thank you. Yes, that's correct, and thank you for noticing this example. Panel reading has a flow, that are more like curves; and in a 1 picture 2x2 grid I can play with it a lot. While in 4 pictures, the eye is reset to the top left and follow the diagonal of reading Left to Right and immediately chase the speechbubbles and the faces. Something about composition and the comic format is lost.I put that on my list. I'm collecting data, I'll blog about my results soon.

@gunchleoc With the feedback I'm collecting, yes, it sounds like "both" is the right approach. I more and more think about the inverse of what you wrote: keep the 2x2 single picture here, and put a link direct to a fullscreen/swipe reader, something where I can also put bonus (like making of, sources). That's because I also collect that there are clients reading the Fediverse on their way (eg. Fedilab showing picture in reverse order, or another one, showing them like files in attachment).

@davidrevoy What I think is missing when you split it is the context : author, name of the series, licence. Everything that is not exactly inside each picture but holds them together to give sense. But said that, I do not own a smartphone, so probably not the concerned audience. I like books, and the full picture with 4 panels is closer to what I would expect from a book.

Rolls for me? *Once* got a number as high as 3.Different group, CP2020, d10, higher is better, if you get 10 you keep rolling, on 1 things go badly. Life of team depends on the roll? How high do I need to roll? 7? 15? 22? I'll most likely get it. Any other roll? *Sometimes* I'll get as high as 3.I ain't rolling needlessly

@davidrevoy @gunchleoc I voted firstly for four single ones, because the scrolling on mobile annoyed me on every single comic. But now, I think that the 2x2 is better as it looks more comic-like and has its specific style. If you still go for the single ones, maybe frames (also with copyright and episode title, numbering) could help.

@davidrevoy @hardaker this mastodon bug of hiding more than 4 was reported so many years ago, its so disappointing they dont want to improve in the obvious ways. iirc there also is a "feature" where if you add a video, you have just one attachment show

@davidrevoy I would prefer 4 pictures theory but as others have said clients unpredictable display is definitely a downside. Even the official web app crops them to 3:2 when you're viewing the whole post. Not a huge deal, but not a great first impression(I'd argue clients should show the full images when they're all the same aspect ratio and it's in some reasonable range, but good luck getting the entire ecosystem to do that)

@davidrevoy I love it! That last panel could make a great t-shirt. Change the wording to "You had to roll a one!" and it'd be nicely self-contained.

@davidrevoy Since the right answer is "whichever takes less work every week," do you automate the post-to-Mastodon step? If it's just a matter of adding three more image-upload API calls, that's easier.(And if you don't and want to, remind me here or on Matrix, and I'll walk you through the script that I use to schedule toots in advance.)

@davidrevoy Four individual images is not as convenient to work with if one wants to share your comic elsewhere, but the image quality is certainly better. Anyway, are we technically allowed to share your comic around?

@circuitsunfish Yes, I saw that on Instagram too, where it can go up to 9 pictures (and more maybe?). Unfortunately, not something I can do with my comic, because the picture limit on Mastodon is 4 pictures by posts...

@sloanlance Thank you for the feedback! Sure, you are even encouraged! You'll find on the website the high resolution (just click on it) https://www.peppercarrot.com/en/miniFantasyTheater/047.html , and under the transcript (for the alt text) and even the layered Krita file. It's under a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike and it gives you a lot of permissions, commercial included.

@jcolag Hey, I keep posting all manually, just because I don't like really using script for my social interactions, but I pretty automated all the "split in four pictures" with Imagemagick and bash; I have the four output pictures with no effort now. The longer part is just to copy/paste the four part of my transcript for the alt text. It's a couple minute longer to do, but in comparison to the 16 hours this comic strip took me to paint, it's insignifiant. I would say the effort are the same.

@davidrevoy I have a friend in my roleplaying group who is… lucky and unlucky. We often joke that she should use a coin instead of a d20, because she either makes 1 or 20. Of course, not true, buuuuut it's frequent. (she once made a 20, then a 1, then a 20; and one time, three 20 in a row)As for me… yeah, I think I would roll the golden twenty dice, and get a decent 12.Love the art!

@davidrevoy I love the 4 pictures. With one picture, I subconsciously already see the last one, so the surprise at the end is lost on me. Reading on the phone, I only see the first picture and then can enjoy the others one by one. Story works better for me that way.

@davidrevoy Maybe could be worth posting both, one as a reply to the other. Issues with the four separate panels:– Panels gets cropped on default Mastodon so it doesn’t look that good and text/scene isn’t all visible– Cannot be read at once on desktop, requires clicking around at least 4 times, an incentive to scroll past– Harder to reshare easily (if that’s a goal) / no credits or licence (that can be fixed)I see how it’s better for mobile. Also fit for Pixelfed and similar!

@davidrevoy In my ideal web, this would be a single image with progressive loading (JXL?), whose metadata indicates that it is composed of different panels (each of which has image descriptions of their own) that can be zoomed to sequentially; clients that don't understand that show the full image, those that do show it as sequence depending on the user's preference.Until that works, I find 4-pictures more practical.

@chrysn Oh yes, but lets push the dream even further: JXL for the raster part but embed inside a SVG, so the texts are also possible to be selected and read out-loud the by machine, and a description of the panel also float under it for accessibility. 😺

@bekopharm @rick 😍 THANK YOU! First comment about it, and I really expected to get more about it, but maybe it was forgotten. This is the original soundtrack I was listening while doing the character design. I also tried a lot to make a reference to Parn on the design and color palette, just a younger and 'goofier' version.💜 Record of Lodoss War

@davidrevoy the content matters more than the format and you have great content :)4 pictures is more readable even when I just read them on a desktop and I imagine it makes a huge difference on a mobileWhen I first started reading P&C 9 years ago it was on mobile and required a lot of zooming and scrolling

@davidrevoy Someone probably already said it but I’ll toss my thought: if you post individual panels, include the full comic at the end in case we want to share it in places where one image is more convenient 🙏🏻

@jerclarke Yes, thank you, it's a good point and a popular feedback, but unfortunately Mastodon limits me to 4 pictures per post. @davidrevoy I would like first to get full list of which events each number on the dice causes, and only then think about rolling it. Otherwise risk is way too big.
