The answer is there is no difference and they are used interchangeably when it comes to handheld weapons. :pepe_nerd:

all the guns in star wars fire plasma bolts. From handheld blasters to the turbolasers on a star destroyer. Some are more powerful and the mechanisms mights vary a little, but it's all charged gasses.
