The series follows Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, two of the few survivors of the mining, transporting, processing, and consumption of Earth's resources by an alien corporation, as they are forced to compete in a dungeon crawl recreated from those resources for an intergalactic reality show program. As of December 2025, the first seven books have sold over six million copiesI had no idea this existed. I also first thought LitRPG would be something more like roleplaying gamebooks where you'd make choices on how to level up your character :hitler_hmm:

@coolboymew @Kerosene @lain I discovered this last summer at a Christian writer's convention. It's basically the elements of SAO and Accel World and their ilk but written by westerners. It's about 90% garbage (as is anything else), but I like Accel World. The guys who write it are usually into TTRPG, anime, and/or video games like you would expect. My conclusion is that they are men who don't have the know-how to rediscover the works of Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs. It's still pulpy, but it's often of even sloppier quality than the early 20th century pulps.Oh, there's also much influence from Chinese LNs like wuxia stories and such.

@coolboymew @lain Only some Isekai has game stats.All lit-rpg has game stats.And, often there is no rebirth, or going to another world in lit-rpg.Often a straight up fantasy story.

@coolboymew @lain More than that, usually when you listen to the audio book. Isekai will some times tell you a stat here or there.But, a lit-rpg will constantly read you all these stats, even if nothing changed. again and again, until you want to boil them in oil...

@coolboymew @lain @hazlin Yeah, the modern mainstream isekai genre all run a bit downhill of the foundations SAO set (despite it not actually being an isekai) and as such the vast majority of them have litrpg elements in one form or another atm.
