(im gonna assume youre somewhat familiar with systemd and other inits, if you have any clarifying questions feel free to ask)basically, systemd is a monolith that contains a lot of utilities that just don't exist outside of systemd, which causes non-systemd distros to still require some systemd stuff to be able to be full desktop distrosin gentoo for example this is done with systemd-utils, which installs things like systemd-tmpfiles, systemd-boot, systemd-stub, and most importantly, systemd-udevtmpfiles, boot, and stub are pretty optional, but udev is something that is generally required by every major desktop nowadays since it's the most "powerful" in terms of configurationwe do have different udev daemons, skarnets mdevd for example, but they don't implement the same featureset as systemd-udev, so desktops werent able to start with just mdevdwhat I did is make a shim that runs alongside mdevd and applies the systemd-udev configs and database to events that mdevd processes, that way (as seen in the screenshot) we can have full blown desktops without any systemd programs
