i wonder why so many weebs are spanish-speaking. what caused the culture to evolve in that direction, and in which country exactlythe only other language which i associate with weebness is french, but to a much lower extent(prompted by once again finding an AMV with all comments in spanish)

@domi it always comes down to which countries decided to broadcast anime on public tvand with france the other factor is that french animation has big tradition

@q66 yeah i’ve read about the french animation a bit ^^ so that’s less of a surprisepoland had a lot of anime on TV in the 90s (mostly targetting young children) and I didn’t really see this fandom-spawning effect. there’s lots of people with nostalgia for the shows (and RTL7 and Polonia1, stations where those aired), but being a weeb wasn’t popular at all ~15 years agoi know that italy had a bunch of anime broadcasted with dubs (… because Polonia1 trashpicked italian dubbed tapes and re-dubbed them in polish. true story) but i haven’t really seen much italian weebs eithernote: i may be biased

@domi austria/germany has a bunch of weebery and that's due to tv broadcast tooczechia had some anime for children but never anywhere as big, and in spain and also portugal, anime is *huge*, and afaik also due to tv

@domi@donotsta.reSpanish public TV in the 90s / 2000 ran a lot of a anime, unfiltered, uncategorized, uncensored. It was good.Also there is the theory that japanese people are as atracted to Spain as Spain is to Japan because of the way the culture match against each other. Also the fonetics of the language being similar-ish might affect

@domi @q66 I became a weeb because of... peer pressure :neocat_floof_explode:.Circa 2009 everyone was watching anime (not just typical Pokemon, Megaman, Shaman King, Naruto or Sailor Moon) in my class and I was curious so one day I looked it up and watched Death Note... which got me hooked and it went "downhill" from there. In high-school we would whip out a laptop and watch anime between classes while sitting on the ground waiting for the teacher to come. One time we had half of the class (~10 people) sitting in front of a 15in laptop watching Soul Eater.These days a lot of people are watching it, my sister recently watched Frieren and I was like "hol up, you're watching anime?!"
