@EUCommission That's a good step, but ultimately, Europe needs to start emphasizing its own home-grown social platforms, and reduce as much as possible its dependence on platforms from other parts of the world that do not share its values. And high-profile European politicians need to stop relying on X or Bluesky as a primary mean of communication, as it provides such platforms with excessive influence.

@EUCommission I'm glad the EU is recognizing this issue, unfortunately it seems to be getting worse recently with how much we in Europe depend on US services and how the Trump administration doesn't share our values & is willing to weaponize them. These services should be pushed to operate according to local laws but transitioning to digital sovereignty is probably the best way forward.

@EUCommission First:How can we expect for these companies (like Meta) to effectively combat disinformation if they're making money out of it via engagement?Second:How are we able to control billions of user & bot post?Do not suggest AI. Too harmful to nature and it won't work, it might make things actually worse.Identity verification? Yeah, we might install facial recognition cameras like China does.(Also if we are so for open internet why are Federated social sites at the bottom?)

@EUCommission Make it more prominent and also provide an icon link to Mastodon in your footer please. 🙏 We can't cry about digital sovereignty and then not embrace the platforms we actually got. But also a compliment: At least the EU Commission is active on Mastodon - thank you for this!!! - while other EU institutions still lag behind on this front.

Requiring identity verification (confusingly called #ageverification) to use it makes it less open.Besides, let's be honest, it's not about the kids. It's about tracking online activity of every EU citizen. Thus, so-called age verification not only makes the internet less open, it also makes it less safe for everyone.
