       I haven't recommended music in a while.Here we go:Bonobo's album from the Late Night Tales series takes you to places, both familiar and distant. Dimly lit rooms, empty streets at 3am, memories half-remembered. With a good sense for mood and texture, he seamlessly weaves contemplative moments with gently grooving passages.        Another album I keep in my permanent collection.It says hip-hop on the label and while I'm not a big fan of that genre, the heavy use of funk, soul, and jazz samples lets it break free of that box.        Metro Area's 2002 album takes us to a New York loft party circa 1982, yet doesn't live in the past. Its analog synths, warm basslines, tight drum patterns sound fresh. Nothing is forced, everything breathes. Genre-defiant once more, it sits between deep house, Italo disco, and post-disco boogie, yet belonging fully to none of them. What makes it work is restraint. No track overstays, no element crowds another.
