The Bookish Type, in Leeds, is encouraging vandalising of the beloved children’s novels by JK Rowling to raise money for transgender healthcare. The bookshop is charging 25p for visitors to write messages on the pages of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The funds raised will go towards healthcare for transgender people. One such message, addressed to Rowling, reads: “You’ve ruined yourself, ruined the name of feminism and ruined the precious childhood of thousands of women and girls. F--- you.” Another addresses the author by her first name, saying “Trans people will outlast you, Joanne”, while a third states: “JK Rowling is a c---.” One individual accused Rowling of “betraying” her legacy, survivors, women and children. The Bookish Type said it was hosting the vandalising as a “silly and cathartic way to raise money for five local trans people”. “We believe a similar thing can be said about tending to joy, hence, the desire to spread joy among the community is central to this initiative. “Existing as a trans person in this political climate is both exhausting and terrifying; it feels especially important to give the community a way to release some emotion.”They added: “We have had an overwhelmingly positive response from not only our local but also the international community - people from Portugal, Switzerland, Canada, New Zealand and the US have reached out to donate to the campaign. A spokesman for The Bookish Type said: “Camille Sapara Barton speaks on the necessity of tending to grief within social and political movements to avoid burnout and build sustainable resistance.   🙄 Gender-critical activists accused the bookshop’s owners of engaging in “childish displays of petty destruction”. Maya Forstater, chief executive of the sex-based rights charity Sex Matters, described the book vandalising as “the most striking example I’ve seen of trans activists misrepresenting where the real harm lies”.Rowling said: “Emma and Dan [Radcliffe] in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right – nay, obligation – to critique me and my views in public. “Like other people who’ve never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life, she’s ignorant of how ignorant she is … I wasn’t a multimillionaire at 14. “I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous. I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women’s rights, in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated, means to women and girls without her privileges.”

They've finally figured out that buying Rowling's books or other related merchandise just to destroy it is just making her richer. So they've decided to just get one book and have people write mean things in it. Baby steps!
