I really think the appeal of LLM chatbots is the opportunity to just admit to being stupid or ignorant when asking questions.Like there's a fundamental need that all of us have to be able to say "I don't know fuck about shit" and have someone teach us something. That's basically how an apprenticeship works for a profession. "I am new and ignorant, please teach me." and that's where journeymen come from: learning from someone else who learned from someone else who at some point fucked up enough to learn what *not* to do.However, modern society has disincentivized this to such a degree that we're seeking guidance from any non-judgemental entity. Instead of a more learned person in our social circle taking us under their wing, public admissions of ignorance are met with derision and mockery. Machines don't do that. They might not be able to instruct a person in the same way that a person can, when connecting with another person, but for the average MF there's nothing to lose by asking the galaxy brain. Either you get what you wanted to know, or you get bullshit and try something else. Truly the slot machine analogy remains undefeated.

@prettygood it does be like that, making a mistake seems like such a huge thing nowadaysthere is a general culture of risk aversion across all levels, but it also feels a lot more accepted to be extremely judgemental for small mistakes (which I am almost sure social media culture has compounded)

@kura @prettygood yeah always ever moving toward purely basing our existence on productivity and end results being the only things that matterI also feel like there's a strong vibe to "fall in line", even among subcultures, which feeds into the judgemental cycle

@epsi @prettygood I think it's a culture which starts with the way classic schools works (as opposed to ones derived from celestin freinet, made more than a 100 years ago now), as students aren't really encouraged to participate in the pool of knowledge, it's only towards the teacher and students smugly correcting teacher or their peers ends up almost better seen than adding knowledge.

@trashwizard what's hilarious to me is that what we call "software engineering" would never pass muster for any other use of the word engineering in any other industry. Imagine if a bridge collapsed or a machine broke itself because "there was a bug in the implementation". We're all, even the best programmers, just building sandcastles and then someone decides that the sandcastle is now infrastructural.

@prettygood I don't even mean this in a 'we need to let kids learn more freely and explore' way, because actually I think one of the biggest issues is that kids are allowed to pass through classes with good grades without learning anything. Good teachers don't set low expectations, but they do patiently explain anything you don't know without judgement.

@prettygood What about making your own one on local host 127.0.0.1/8... ? and add a RAG system in it to feed it with text from a file in a directory, you'll use a scraper to get manpages and official docs from public domains to feed it decent and have a hallucination checker alongside it but it is not needed at all as you must put the settings at right parameters and it gets information from trusted knowledge so all is 100% proved right by my hallucination app I made. Also, it can complement the things we do not know. No one is an ace of all things.. only drawback is it's slow in response for me but could be my build of of it or elsewhere.It's been like a week or so I did not pulled the latest from github for the LLama.cpp nor started it up. But at occasions I really need it I will use it accordingly.No API and no network needed at all.in short: you can make your own, private no API and learn it whatever you like and it will work.

@yakmacker @prettygood lots of college requirements are very patchwork. I remember entering machine learning class very rusty on my calf and linear algebra and feeling very embarrassed and afraid to let the teacher know so I just l spent a lot of time reading textbooks and asking llms.
