       In both cases, all of the energy is going to stirring air. In the case of the plane it might be marginally less efficient because not only do you have the fuselage but you also have wings that are stirring air to produce lift.But when you include all of the (energy) cost of building and maintaining the rail infrastructure, trains are HILARIOUSLY less efficient than air travel.

       If you get rid of the air the math turns the other way, so once drilling technology improves sufficiently that drilling and evacuating tunnels is realistic, that will eventually beat aircraft on marginal cost - so at some point it begins to have a payback period.Also "switched packet" transport is interesting because you can transport people, goods, raw materials, etc in the same tube.

       @cjd @lain @cell Hyperloop didn't really work, so I'd expect there to still be air resistance in those tunnels. In the case of flights, you have less air resistance at altitude than on the ground, which might cancel out the wings. (I'm not an expert, no idea.)Passenger trains exist only due to regulations requiring them nowadays, otherwise cargo would be more profitable both during the day and the night.However, you really can't beat traveling while sitting in a bistro. Buses are terrible.
