       Why are we doing firmware updates on our hard drives? Am I just out of touch, because I've never needed to do that in my entire life, until now with Samsung NVME. And I don't really trust that it's not simply hiding a hardware problem so they can drag the device past the warranty finish line.

       @empathicqubit@mastodon.de One of the SSDs I owned had a firmware update which prevented a software issue that permanently bricked the drive.If you bought it from Intel. Mine was a rebadged Lenovo OEM variant, so no update. Aaand it died.

       When I sent them a drive with SMART issues, I expected to receive a different device back, not for them to update the firmware and delete the SMART records.
