@Violinknitter yeah, even for vocal scores you’d leave some space (if not proportional) *shudder* someone’s Musikverlag trying to save paper again?It’s telling that they now need to sell "XL" vocal scores because their normal size is too small, too.

@Violinknitter Haha, this sort of irritation was at the root, many years ago, of my journey to becoming a music editor and engraver. Note (and rest) spacing is surprisingly complex, and quite a lot of it is compromise by eye, which the software tends to fail at. But your example is definitely all wrong.

@Gaolaitch I didn’t look too closely at the rest of the page to see if it was a necessary compromise or just got overlooked. I suspect overlooked, b/c this composer tends to put out reliably readable scores usually

@Violinknitter I’m not sure what software is in use here (might be Sibelius with some very thin line settings, but the beam placements are all slightly wrong so I guess early MuseScore). But they (modern music software) all have spacing algorithms that would (with default settings) not allow that. If the user forced one too many bars on to the system, that would be the sort of outcome you’d see.

@mirabilos @Violinknitter Actually it’s only some of the beam placements. If you’re using recent MuseScore, it is improved, and I think it’s probably getting these simple placements right (it’s not my tool of choice).Traditional rule is that beams in the stave should always start and end touching a stave line: either sitting on, straddling, or hanging from. In beats 1&2 of b133 the upper beam is floating between stave lines. Raising them a quarter-space will resolve this. I would also raise all the beams in b130 so the upper beam hangs from the bottom stave line, but that is more a preference.

@Gaolaitch @Violinknitter I use 2.3.2 (old scores only) and 3.2.3 with lots of backports, so… old and medium, I guess? The 4.x is straddling being nōn-free.Ah, yes. The first two in m.133, indeed. (I also checked Gould.)Here’s what 3.2.3 does; I suppose they fixed it. (Remainder of the lines is just empty measures; these are my standard settings, no spacing adjustments. I’m not fond of these slurs, but I mostly do vocal scores, where this would… not occur anyway.)

@Gaolaitch I do, but I also still collect advice ;) there’s a few places where I even disagree with her but which probably counts as “house style” (e.g. I put parenthesēs around all courtesy accidentals, lest the amateur singer gets confused and accidentally (hah) overcompensates).(I would also like to sell it to afford the German one, as I heard it’s not just a translation but also adjusted to contain German traditions…)I didn’t learn from her but attended her keynote in Salzburg early 2020 (which had to be streamed). What an amazing woman.

@Gaolaitch I only got into musical engraving becauseI hate bass clefso I can type in our pieces then move Tenor to G8vb clefI liked reading about (ordinary) typographic details alreadyI never trained for musical anything, even missed two years of music lessons at school due to changing schools and the old one had put them into later years and the new one into earlier years, and I don’t have “the musical ear”, so I suck at harmony and whatnot, but I can at least make beautiful sheet musicI do Open Source, Open Educational Resources, etc. already anyway, so Free Sheet Music is the logical consequencehttps://mbsd.evolvis.org/music/free/ if you want to have a peek at those pieces I can licence freely. @Gaolaitch looks too cramped for me, but then, in vocal scores, the lyrics mostly define the spacing, and that’s what I’m used to (and try to learn the rules for). The spacing is okay-ish, but the ledger lines feel too close to each other. (The 2.3.2 one is even more cramped by default.)

@Gaolaitch I go for larger/wider than publishers anyway, also because I design for A4 as that’s what people would print this on here. (And because then I can narrow things a little where needed without feeling bad.)(Nice side effect is the old ladies in choir thanking me for music they can read more easily…)
