       Me: Greenpeace is advertising fossil fuels on their web site.Tech folks: Just use an ad blocker, problem solved.Other tech folks: Oh but the SUV they sell has a switch you can use to turn off the petrol engine.(Note: Greenpeace isn’t advertising any such thing because they’re not bullshit. FairPhone, however, is advertising Google Gemini AI as a desirable feature for their environmentally-friendly phone. Analogies, like the one above, are necessary because tech folks – who will be the first to remind you how very clever they are because they can make computers go beep-boop – can, at first glance, appear remarkably naïve when it comes to understanding things like institutional corruption, whitewashing, and the laundering of legitimacy. Analogies like this are useful in proving that no, this really isn’t rocket science, and no, they’re not actually that daft, they’re just being wilfully obtuse.)

       @aral Greenpeace has and is bullshitting in many ways. I follow them and I appreciate many actions they carry out, but too often they bend to particular politics, don't take into account effects on vulnerable communities or simply follow anti-scientific practices.In this specific topic, they could prevent such ads appearing in their website. This is not difficult. Unfortunately, they are too big, manage too much money and (this would not be a problem but) they do not consider other system outside capitalism.

       @aral @precariousmind and that is surely directly a sign of climate change..I haven't used a Fairphone as its a device sold at a premium with fewer features than other devices at same price point and I keep mobile phones until the hardware fails or the OS is too insecure, but the Chinese manufacturers are also barking at their heels - I bought a number of Blackview devices for staff at work (as they are ruggedised) and even one for myself, and they are already selling DIY screen and digitiser repair kits widely available from online sellers - something I've not seen with other brands..
