       @cstross The lettering on these keycaps is weirdly resilient! LG must have special patents or something.But yeah, I've never seen keys snap like this. I suspect the SHIFT is next.

       @mwl I used to snap keys in my teens ... on a very lightweight portable manual typewriter, where you had to hit them with some force to move the type arm! (That typewriter died when I was 16; it took a month to get a key fixed, then the next month another would break …)

       @cstross oh, I had a portable typewriter as a teenager. Begged for it for Christmas, as I couldn't submit handwritten stories. They got me the cheapest one, because I was going to outgrow it. I learned to type without looking at my hands, like a "Real Writer."It was very mechanical. Typing a letter required effort. The thing clattered like an enraged mechanical beast.The keycaps were on metal spikes. The glue on the E key was bad. Eventually, it would stick to my finger and lift off the spike.Then I would type another E.My finger would come down on a spike.Eventually I learned to bandage my finger BEFORE I started working.        @mwl I think that class of breakage actually is due to keyboard grunge. The side of the key has more travel than the center, which has a large grain of salt (or *something*) under it.

       @mwl@io.mwl.io @cstross@wandering.shop I haven't seen too many LG laptops, but I wasn't super impressed with build quality when I did.I used to order individual laptop keys for replacement, but it never went well -- it's hard to pop off the old and pop in the new without something going wonky. I've had more "success" (too strong of a word for this situation) with replacing the whole keyboard.

       @mwl @cstross I’m not a writer, but I taught myself to touch type in the 70s on my grandfather‘s typewriter so that I could qualify for a fantastic summer job (typing up exam papers for the local girls’ school on an AM Jacquard word processor) and I vividly remember how my fingers would get stuck between the key caps, which had knife-like support arms with inches of travel!
