Hitori Dake no Renga - Skill (36)

Pilot Chesley Sullenberger III is a legitimate hero for his
unbelieveably skillful job in getting 150 passengers safely out
of the air in an emergency water landing in the Hudson River. Of
course, he had help in the form of a practical flotilla of
ferryboats and vessels converging on the crash, and I'm sure he
had a little luck on his side, but you cannot say a single
disparaging word about a man who could get a jumbo jet into the
water without destroying the plane, without seriously injuring
anyone, without endangering anyone on the ground, and made sure
everyone got off the plane before he did.
Sullenberger has been flying for USAirways for 29 years, not
counting his long time logged with the US Air Force. It shows.
We now have a plane about to crash into economic waters with over
306 million people in it. I've been pretty appalled with the
plans announced thus far by the outgoing Administration, trying
to shore up bad business and bad business practices by throwing
good money after bad. On Tuesday, January 20th, we will get a new
President who ran most of his campaign on the concept of hope and
change. I want skill. I want someone who knows what to do, not
someone who hopes for the right thing to be done. So, I hope, for
lack of a better word, that President Obama learns very quickly
how to land a crashing national plane or cold water isn't going
to be the only thing we have to worry about.
President Obama, you have my respect, but right now, hope is not
enough. The country waits for you to develop your skill.
(If you're not sure what the picture is ape-ing, it's Shepard
Fairey's HOPE.)
