There are a number of previous reviews on general techniques used for dark matter searches [104, 119
, 131].
Two basic methods can be used, either direct or indirect. Direct searches depend on dark matter particles
actually passing through detectors and physically interacting with them. Indirect searches look for
secondary products produced when dark matter particles annihilate each other elsewhere. Direct searches
can, in principle, be used to look for neutrinos, axions and WIMPs, whereas only WIMPs are accessible
indirectly.
