@Wolven yes even if there was some subset of "we really need your ID", using it train AI is horrible and unnecessary. imagine if the DMV did that

@futurebird this is a really big distinction and it's hard to not be on one "side" or the other - the right is trying "to win". But what does it mean when the left declares moderate candidates like Biden and even...Pelosi (horrors!), who "can win", to be total non-starters; the only way forward is "overthrow the whole system" - which is how these various 3rd party candidates come about, who essentially work against the D's in states that dont have ranked choice

@futurebird OK! I hope you are right. I thought that Jill Stein, Nader etc. really helped tilt the scales the wrong way in extremely tight contests. I just find that to be very frustrating

@futurebird I live in a purple town in a purple district in NYS. We have managed to push the town government over to the D side, I am proud to have two of our elected Ds as local neighbors and personal friends; but we dont know how long it can last. where I live, things like lawn signs are significant. the district overall we can't get it to the D side.

MySQL server has a bug, some data coming back incorrectly.Report the bug to SQLAlchemy!PostgreSQL has some bug, or the driver has some crashReport the bug to SQLAlchemy!Pandas is reporting a type of a dictionary with a weird non-string type for keys but I know these are stringsReport the bug to SQLAlchemy!this is the "pecking order" of bug reports. You can't report a bug to MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Pandas! they'll never change! they are immovable!

@simon the term "AI" deeply misleads laypeople into thinking sentient minds are at play, leading to all kinds of misuse/harm. I dont have to list links to all the damage "AI" has done so far due to people putting it in charge of things since "it's intelligent".going to keep using technical terms like "machine learning" so that all the non-tech people I talk to understand a tech person like me does not consider this stuff to be "intelligent" in any way we usually define that term for humans

@simon less harm was done in 1955, 1960, 1970 etc. because we didn't have machines that were so singularly focused on pretending to be (confident, authoritative) humans at such massive scales, there was little chance of misunderstanding back then. now these machines have "I hope you misunderstand what I do" at their core

@simon just as the center of my assertion "I hope you misunderstand what I do", I would use the "AI Safety" letter as the prime example, of billionaires and billionaire-adjacent types declaring that this "AI" is so, so close to total sentience that governments *must* stop everyone (except us! who should be gatekeepers) from developing this *so very dangerous and powerful!* technology any furtherlots of non-tech ppl signed onto that thing and it was quite alarming

@b0rk I stayed a hardcore Mercurial user through Git's early ascendance. git rebase was sold to me again and again and I continued to think it was insane. As you might expect, my workflow is entirely based on rebase these days, both for my OSS work and my dayjob. What people weren't able to tell me back then was that the rule-free branching model of git is to facilitate code review. we don't just write code, we author commit streams to tell a clear story of how code evolved for a final change

@glyph uh oh, do we need to call up a big gilded frame picture of Ben Franklin's "deserve neither Liberty nor Safety" quote? :)

@CppGuy @timbray @nedbat I read a fair amount on this including blogs of people like Eric Topol and such. I see hyperbolic claims by folks like @taylorlorenz that state "millions of people are being permanently disabled". Long covid is defined as symptoms present more than 12 weeks after infection. which means if you had symptoms for 14 weeks and then were fine, you had long covid. however that is not "permanently disabled". convince me of your claim?

@futurebird what would it look like to see this energy released? I dont know what I'm looking for. I get 30 emails a day from Democrats as it is and lots of it refers to project 2025. Since I'm not in a swing state, it's all fundraiser email.

@futurebird I think some of that may have been a product of the particular strategy Obama used in 2008 which was the 50 state strategy. Not sure if he did that as much in 2012. I think it was right for Obama because he did represent something obviously very different at the time; as president, he turned out to be in many ways a lot more "traditional" (think drones, missile strikes, etc) than people expected. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifty-state_strategy

@Shivaekul @futurebird do you live in a swing state? I think that would logically be where most of the action is now, if anywhere.

@futurebird then I don't really know. I am sure every candidate wants that kind of thing to happen. My only guess is that there was tons of grassroots for Obama 08 that there has never been since that maybe allowed for a much broader effort downstream to form. Otherwise....David Plouffe has some magic power noone has ever been able to replicate ? Shrugs

@futurebird oh, because you think a revved up base would become a liability.....can you expand on that ? Did that happen when Obama won in 08?
