@lawgeeknz @keith Yep definitely a bit of a conundrum. I have no idea how this would play out in court, but here on our server, you get banned for violating the rules. It really doesn't have to be any more complicated than that.

PSA:The most environmentally friendly piece of tech/hardware is the one you already own. It's almost certainly fit for purpose. Repair that shit.Planned obsolescence is a scam

Oh no! A popular cloud service that appeared completely trustworthy has been hacked and all my passwords are now potentially in the hands of criminals!....Better quickly pick another trustworthy-looking cloud service....gee I sure hope these guys try harder to look after me.Take control of, and responsibility for your own damn data. It's not for everyone, but I use KeepassXC here, which is a program that runs locally on my machines/phones, and I sync the database between them using syncthing

We all keep choosing to delegate that control and responsibility to companies that are obviously either unwilling or unable to protect our data properly. It seems like a good choice. Why? Because they're professional-looking, it seems like they probably have some clues about what they're doing, and it's "free" - as in it doesn't cost time or money, and you don't have to learn anything.Centralizing all that important data makes for a very attractive target, though. There are other options.

People are really screenshotting toots and linking to them because there's no quoting feature?...Why don't you just boost the original and comment on it?Your followers will see both the boost and your comment.Edit: yes, I'm looking at you, #retoot

This is basically how it works:Boosts follow the path of a normal post.If you boost something it goes to your followers, which always implies you endorse it.Favorites do nothing except notify the original poster that you liked it.There are no quotes, because they inevitably lead to antisocial behavior.Content warnings are a thing - use them.Norms here might be a bit strange. It's not twitter, it's something else. Look around and get a feel for it. There were people here long before you.

1/"Mastodon Is Doomed"1200 words of abject horseshit from Justin Garrison on the front page of HN this morning.https://justingarrison.com/blog/2023-04-24-mastodon-is-doomed/I don't normally bother with this kind of thing, but I'm bored so here we go...> running an instance is expensive and complicated, No it isnt> And owning your data isnβt a product feature.Yes it is. One that's unparalleled in the corp/centralised socialmedia landscape.

mastodon.nz doesn't use any "cloud" tech/companies at all.We run opensource everything on our own hardware in a datacentre, configured and maintained by real engineers the way God intended. It's rock-solid, fast as hell, cheaper than you might think, and most importanly we control the entire thing.Centralization is the enemy. Build it yourself.

lol google removed the "Sort by Date" option from search.Does it even qualify as a searchengine now?You can't actually *search* for anything with it anymore - It's really just a tool for viewing sponsored content "relevant" to the thing you're searching for.

As bad/annoying/stupid as all this is, it's just pushing me further and further from the commercial web.I can see a future where I have some flavor of chrome installed for use with anything commercial, and the rest of the time I surf a different kind of internet entirely.Honestly, I'm not that bothered by the separation of the two.

Imagine a world where there was a corp net and a civnet. A separate internet where all the standards and services were user-first, privacy-first, security-first. Where the same open source gods who prop up the current trashfire are free from big-tech's fuckwittery, free to build and standardise open protocols that are beneficial to the community.A fringe sort of a place where no respectable business would dream of operating a storefront. A place where compatibility with them is not a concern.
