@wjmaggos I know your point isn’t the show or Colbert, but rather about being independent media. However, I’m not sure that format still works. Those old style TV shows are hella expensive, conceived in a time when they could easily attract 10M+ viewers and corresponding ad revenue. Frankly, I’m surprised it lasted this long, that business model is dead.As an aside, while I absolutely loved the Colbert Report, I never thought he was great as a late night host.

@wjmaggos Does anybody cry about the demise of Big Media? Other than the people losing their paychecks, I suppose. But you touch on the crux of the matter: Big Algo. The power and control just shifted to different overlords, but it didn't go away. I would love to see a world where a decentralized fediverse is how humans interact and where they get their info. But I'm not optimistic. 95% of the people follow the path of the least resistance. And Fedi is not that

@wjmaggos The move to (semi) independence that platforms like Substack offer seems great at first glance, but it turned an ace reporter like Matt Taibbi into an op-ed writer. The need to continually provide content has compromised his ability to take 3 months off to really do those in-depth investigations he did when he was still employed by trad media. I don't have the solution and not saying Substack etc. is bad, just pointing out it's not the panacea some people seem to think it is

@wjmaggos @coachtony @rabble I would not mind subscribing to a creator who charges per item whenever it drops. Like a great reporter dropping in=depth stories once every few weeks or months and I'm being charged x amount automatically when it becomes available
