Here's #HowIRead 📚I have 3 #library cards in #Libby and max out the holds on each one at all times. This means I rarely pay for #books, even popular new releases #Audiobooks are listened to in app, #Ebooks are sent to my #Kindle. I borrow one of each My highlights are automatically synced to #Readwise, which puts highlights on my phone's home screen & makes them searchable I track my reads in #StoryGraph & buy my absolute favorites at local #bookstores for display at home@bookstodon

@bookstodon My philosophy behind this approach is as follows1. I don't want to buy a book I might not like, and feel the pressure to complete it just because I spent money 2. Books are expensive, if I bought all the books I read & DNF I'd have no other leisure budget 3. Books take up space, it's nice only having one small collection of books to deal with when I move 4. Ebooks aren't 'owned', in the case that I lose my ebook collection it's no big deal cause I borrowed most of them

5 rules that help me #read and enjoy more #books 📚 1. If not interested by the 10% mark, DNF2. Never look at aggregated star ratings or reviews by internet randoms 3. Engage with #bookish communities like #bookstodon for recommendations & inspiration 4. Always have at least 2 books in progress at a time (1 audio, 1 text)5. Make it fun/cozy (ambient music, tea)What are your personal #reading rules?@bookstodon @audiobooks

@pgv @bookstodon @audiobooks So far I’ve broken that rule several times and it has never been worth itSometimes epic fantasy takes a while to get going but I’m at least interested in the world, so that helpsA recent example though is Six of Crows, it hadn’t gripped me yet at even 50% and I forced myself to finish it and the sequel which was the same amount of horrible the entire time

@pgv @bookstodon @audiobooks I personally would be, but it’s all about personally preferenceAgain, so far I’ve never read a book I loved that didn’t have my interest within 10%I’ll also clarify that interest ≠ completely engrossed, I just have to care about what’s going on at all within 10%There’s a surprising amount of books out there that just go absolutely nowhere and I’d rather not waste time on them

@elliswyatt @HLGEM @rabia_elizabeth @bookstodon I’m surprised to see that you’ve just acknowledged and validated the concept of a poverty trap, the lower class being kept poor by an external system If you know of anyone who successfully broke into the mainstream audiobook industry with no funding and a smartphone microphone, let me know

@elliswyatt @HLGEM @rabia_elizabeth @bookstodon Ah, you could’ve fooled me, what you said sounds an awful lot like a poverty trap“I'll let you in on a secret, poor white men can't get loans either, that's why they're still poor.”^ This was correct, and there’s numerous other ‘speed bumps’ that sort of surround you until you find yourself in a trappedAnyway, sounds like you don’t know of anyone who successfully competed with the audiobook corpos with a phone, correct?

@elliswyatt @HLGEM @rabia_elizabeth @bookstodon Ah I see, you didn’t read the original post or at least didn’t comprehend it thoroughly OP described recent human audiobook performances as accentless and robotic, this is not a thread about computer generated narration If you’d like a definition of compete, Google is free of charge

@elliswyatt @HLGEM @rabia_elizabeth @bookstodon As you’ve said in other replies, you believe that capitalism doesn’t exist outside of the black market However, you also argue here that in the current state of the market the best product will winWhich is it? Let’s at least establish a baseline ideological consistency

@elliswyatt @pjandy @HLGEM @rabia_elizabeth @bookstodon Actually, Amazon owns arguably the biggest audiobook seller/producer on the marketGoogle is a free service, no harm in using it before you comment on something

@elliswyatt @HLGEM @rabia_elizabeth @bookstodon Ok so you have two arguments running right now and they’re mutually exclusive 1) Anyone can create their own product and the market will accept the best of the offerings2) Capitalism currently doesn’t exist outside of black markets Which is it? (You also did imply that what we have today is capitalism by introducing the ‘person with a phone’ bit)

@pjandy @elliswyatt @HLGEM @rabia_elizabeth @bookstodon To clarify, Audible (Amazon) does produce audiobooks with human narrationI’m unsure of where Ellis is getting their information, maybe an alternate reality?

@elliswyatt @pjandy @HLGEM @rabia_elizabeth @bookstodon Like I said before, OP never claimed that they weren’t producing audiobooks with human narration, the claim was that the human narration is increasingly robotic/accentlessTo make sure we’re absolutely clear this time, the original post in this thread is not about actual robot narration If you don’t understand this after it’s been laid out multiple times, I’ll assume you’re deliberately misunderstanding

@elliswyatt @pjandy @HLGEM @rabia_elizabeth @bookstodon Once more, the position OP had is that mainstream audiobook narration is trending toward robotic-sounding narration, not narration done by non-humans

@pjandy @HLGEM @rabia_elizabeth @bookstodon Ah, that explains why Ellis’ logic isn’t ideologically consistent between comments. It’s almost like watching two people operate one account simultaneouslyGoodbye @elliswyatt Thanks for the heads up @bhalpin

@elliswyatt @pjandy @HLGEM @rabia_elizabeth @bookstodon @bhalpin I wasn’t going to respond but you provided the two facets of your position and said that they are ‘mutually exclusive and consistent with each other’Mutually exclusive by definition means that they cannot exist simultaneously Meaning you just said yourself that the two views you hold aren’t ideologically consistent, I think this sums up this conversation perfectly

This #quote is a perfect example of why I love revisiting old #book highlights daily, when I read this originally I wasn’t yet aware of the concept of #CarDependency #Cars are like #SocialMedia. In theory they should make us more connected, but in practice they isolate us from our communitiesIf you don’t already, I highly recommend revisiting old #highlights / #annotations with fresh eyes :)@bookstodon #Bookstodon #Bookish #Readwise #Kindle

The most chronically online #bookish take I’ve seen recently is that you shouldn’t give a #book a bad review or DNF it publically because those actions hurt authors’ feelings I’m surprised that this sentiment gained as much traction as it did, seems like common sense that reviews and DNF shelves are for the #readers not the #authors @bookstodon
