after falling down a wikipedia hole last night, i found this in depth article from the 90s about how multiple programming errors led a radiation chemotherapy device to give lethal doses of radiation to some patients under certain circumstances. i figured some of the programmerfolk in particular on the fedi might find this interesting, although this nonprogrammer was also able to understand it.http://www.ccnr.org/fatal_dose.html

@selontheweb as someone who used to work in marketing for a startup (before they fucked me over by putting me in charge of a failing project and then fired me š ) can confirm, this is all absolutely true. my boss straight up told me that there's no proof retargeting (showing people ads for stuff they've looked at before) actually works and yet they kept doing it. we did lots of a/b tests, but only for which version of an ad got more clicks, not for if the ad should be there at all.

fellow white people: it's time to donate, not to just talk about how sad and angry you are. no one needs to hear it. put your money where your mouth is. you know your finances. if you know you have spare cash, time to put it to work. give to bail funds or just directly to black people requesting mutual aid.(if you don't have spare cash... understood, don't feel bad about it. there are other ways to help. this post isn't aimed at you)

hi everyone! i'm breaking my usual anonymity to make this post because frankly my roommate and i are a little desperate. we haven't gotten any serious interest on the open room in our apartment yet and if we don't find someone by 7/15, our landlord will take over the process for us. and all he cares about is finding someone who will pay the rent. we'd like at least a little say in who might be living with us for the next year.

i remember when i first joined the fediverse a few years ago i wasn't expecting muchbut then i made my first post & the lovely people of weirder.earth (which still had its "a" back then) started responding immediately! i was shocked!on most social networks, it feels like you're posting into the void until you build up a community yourselfjoining a small mastodon instance is like joining a pre-existing community. i think that's special. and the local tl is largely what allows that to exist.

iām loud about abortion access because i used to be in the pro-life movement.when youāre on the inside they donāt hide their punitive attitudes. deep down, for them, a baby is a punishment you must accept for not keeping your legs closed. thatās why they donāt care about babies after theyāre born. helping would lighten someone elseās punishment.they donāt care about life. they don't care if the lives they āsaveā suffer after birth. in fact they quietly want them to.

hey yāall. american thanksgiving is coming up. i know itās a shitty colonialist holiday. but i think one way to make some good out of it is to donate money to your local food bank. thanksgiving is also traditionally a food and harvest centric holiday, and demand for food banks spikes during the winter, so i feel like this makes sense. also, the pandemic is still happening and many people are still struggling financially. so i hope youāll join me in doing this. :boost_requested:

i'm going to use some different resources that have been shared around to compile a list of some different abortion funds specifically in states with "trigger ban laws," where abortion immediately became illegal on the federal overturning of roe. donating to funds in these states is not a waste as a lot of it will now likely be spent giving people money to travel to seek abortions in states where it is still legal.
