No citizens want it. The entire crypto scene, “cryptobros” included, hate it. But the fact is countries around the world - the US, EU, UK, Denmark, China, and more - pretty much every nation and political bloc in the world is either developing one or writing up papers, putting deals together, getting ready to make one.The ultimate goal is to create a cashless society and introduce these CBDCs as a replacement. In other words use will be government mandated. In China this has already happened and their CBDC is used to enforce the social credit system. Say bad stuff about the government online? Sorry, you can’t spend money anymore. Government wants to encourage spending? Sorry, your money will expire in 12 months. Most average joes don’t care much about privacy, this is obvious, but this is not some whacko dystopian conspiracy, it’s already happening and being copied by the West too.I really hope they care enough to push back against a CBDC once they understand the severity of the threat they pose.I’ve written a lot to draw awareness and encouraged people to stack XMR because I believe it will be the primary - if not only - viable weapon against CBDCs as it acts as truly anonymous and untraceable money, like cash, but digital.https://mirror.xyz/xanny.eth/VEr4PxtU9yOU3XUwz3tIROFa8ZbzBw6EMh1MCSJMkEo

Part of me thinks you’re right but, call me an optimist here, I think this is different because Ethereum was always niche. Even as the second biggest crypto, how many people are actually doing stuff on the blockchain? What portion of the overall population do they make up? It’s miniscule.CBDCs will be introduced by the state. Groups like the EFF and ORG will sound the alarm. They’ll be all over the MSM. China will get brought up as an example of the dystopian power they provide governments. This is very different from a niche interest like Ethereum. This is something the state will push onto the population. Everyone will be encouraged to use them at first and ultimately forced to.The audience will be bigger, it’ll become a serious political issue, and enough people care for transactional privacy that there is a chance for public sentiment to turn against it.No doubt the government will keep trying to force it through anyway. But the public awareness will greatly surpass that of anything on Ethereum.

Agreed people don’t care about privacy as a rule. But they care enough about financial privacy to keep their bank accounts, transactions, statements very private indeed.People will post just about anything on social media… but never a bank statement, never a bank balance. If the government views this the same as general internet privacy and use the same tactics, they will find it a lot more difficult than expected, I believe.Wrt covid, a lot of regular average people are against forced vaccinations, the suppression of information, the forced conformity. They will talk about it in the pub. There were anti-lockdown protests around the world. US, UK, EU, everywhere. Massive crowds. MSM ignored them, but people showed up in force.Governments just about got away with this because it was temporary and everyone had a brother of a cousin who died of covid (even though we know the stats were botched) but when it comes to permanent control of how everyone spends their money forever… I expect protests and possibly even riots on the streets if the same attitude is taken with this.

I judge software by the quality of the software. Not what other groups supposedly use it. By this logic, no one should drink water, because guess who else drank water? Hitler! This is doubly silly in the fediverse where admin decisions are made by the individual running the instance. A bigot can run a Mastodon instance. An LGBT advocate can run a Pleroma instance. As stated in the article I made my choice based on Pleroma being the more resource efficient and customisable platform. My name is “Xanny” so yes I enjoy taking substances. Do you enjoy drinking? What is the difference? Did you know the war on drugs propaganda comes from decades old American racism?Good article: https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/594j8b/the-war-on-drugs-is-inseparable-from-us-imperialismI won’t get into a crypto debate here because, much like whether I enjoy consuming certain substances or not, it is immaterial to the article. I write a few paragraphs about web3 towards the end. Feel free to skim past if they’re not of interest. 80% of the article is simply a detailed intro to the fediverse.

These are complex questions each instance admin will have their own views on.Keeping in mind I run a very small instance with only ~10 other people on it, all of whom I personally invited, I take a lax “I trust you not to be dicks” approach.Obviously for a bigger community, or really any with open registrations, this isn’t sufficient.Because this is the fediverse and users or admins can block entire domains if they wish, I think admins should act in the best interests of their own users as much as is reasonable. But assuming an influx of new users is imminent, you will not please everyone no matter what you do.My next blog post will be dedicated to this exact topic and I will expand on it in great detail there. In the meantime I wrote a status about it yesterday: https://codeine.world/@xanny/posts/APyREuVbrTgY1UUTkOTL’;DR: The bigger the instance, the less community feel you get, the lower quality content is posted, the more harsh moderation becomes needed, and the more drama ensues as a result of all this. If we do indeed see a significant influx of new users from Twitter, a great deal of drama will occur as different admins take different approaches to balancing protecting the vibe of their communities with welcoming newcomers.I’ve seen this time and time again on forums and subreddits. As soon as a community goes from small and close-knit to rapid growth, quality declines, drama increases, original mods get burnt out.The status I linked goes into much more detail if you’re curious. Blog post will go into it even further.

On the modern versions of Mastodon, accounts are completely portable. You can straight up export all your data (as is required for GDPR compliance) and import it to a new instance.Backup accounts are never a bad idea. You can use them to instantly import your old account if needed.

What do you think the reason for Apple limiting #AirDrop to 10 seconds only on Chinese iPhones was? Just a coincidence that it happened in the middle of the #ChinaProtests where it was being used to share information without #censorship yeah?If Apple didn’t want to comply with the CCP, #Apple could just, you know, not sell iPhones in #China.#Google pulled out of the #Chinese market over a decade ago after the CCP asked them to start censoring search results in the mainland. To this day, Google does not operate in China. They’ve still been massively profitable.#TimCook went out of his way to bend over backwards to the Chinese government, knowing full well what the consequences would be, because even though Apple was already pulling in billions he wanted more:https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/17/technology/apple-china-censorship-data.htmlThere’s no moral justification here. It’s just money money money. If you’re an Apple shareholder I’m sure you’re happy. But the fact is Apple is profiting from assisting Winnie the Pooh’s oppressive regime. Apple didn’t need to operate in the Chinese market. They never did under Steve Jobs. It was Tim Cook who went out to China and practically begged them to embrace Apple, agreeing to make any concessions the CCP wanted. But hey at least they put suicide nets on their sweatshops I guess. As for your assertion that Chinese people would have no means of communication without Apple… I mean do I really even need to explain how absurd that is?Are you #50CentArmy? Hope you at least upped your social credit score.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/50_Cent_Party

I use Keyoxide, Monero, and PGP. My Keyoxide profile and PGP fingerprint are both listed on my profile. I have an XMR address listed on my ENS. I’m not against you on this. I’ve written whole articles advocating Monero, teaching people to mine it, and arguing that Ethereum is WEF owned and lamenting its use for CBDCs.https://mirror.xyz/xanny.eth/VEr4PxtU9yOU3XUwz3tIROFa8ZbzBw6EMh1MCSJMkEo

I didn’t intend it to be literal, I meant more that they serve the same purpose of indexing and fetching content. Although that content is indexed and located by cryptographic signatures as it is in DHT nodes too.
