You suggest “the gnome community” as an alternative to the FSF that actually cares?? lol, LMAO even.instead of saying patches welcome in a derogatory way, they said so stuff’s broken? let’s see how we can fix it. Afterwards, begun a collaboration and a dialog in order to fix it, and by the time the next few releases rolled around, most of the accessibility issues got fixed.Meanwhile, if you try to, I don’t know, ACTUALLY SUBMIT PATCHES to fix a problem, gnome maintainers will decline stating some stupid bullshit like “all development has moved to GTK4, not accepting patches to GTK3 anymore” despite my patch fixing an actual fucking problem that has a simple and uncontroversial fucking solution with a two line code change. Gnome is domineering and unwelcoming of any outsider patches or ideas by comparison to any FSF project I have ever participated in. Some “community” gnome turned out to be. A bunch of insular fuckwads.Meanwhile I report a bug in a GNU project component, like nano, regarding some very poor behaviour for accessibility when on a physical terminal, and they immediately investigated and fixed the bug even without me sending in a patch. And thanked me for reporting the bug and explained to me what the problem was.

a whole class of the old computers i like will become infinitely less usable under linux in particular the moment toolkits stop supporting X, and this is a genuine problem that should be taken seriously instead of saying "you should just buy shiny new AI-enabled razor thin bendable NPU thing and encourage the bastards ruining tech and just use wayland bro"

@freya for me most of my rage towards it is due to the "security model" of it where you aren't allowed to do jack shit unless your specific compositor explicitly provisions for it and different compositors provision for it in different ways and there isn't even parity for local features like ICC profile loading

@freya BTW i *heavily* use X forwarding every single goddamn da on my LAN and so network transparency is probably the single biggest sticking point for me as well.Or it would be, but I use FVWM and ICC profiles and will give both up/cripple them under some form of wayland protocol wrapper over my dead body

@neauoire @prahou what editor is that?i wrote my whole site in HTML directly inside emacs with just a couple custom macros to insert <p> tag pairs and things of that nature quickly. Although I also have some CSS. But I wrote the CSS in emacs as well, and the site explicitly was designed to still be totally readable without CSS.I like your quick table insertion, i was writing those by hand

i will assert that the web was simply better 15-25 years ago and that the multitude of unrelated sites where people would gather to express themselves led to greater happiness and more rewarding engagement with others. To this day, on the handful of forums I still use, I *know* people there. Not just a handful of microcelebrities. On one for instance, I recently found out that someone I talked with nearly every day had had his cat die. He shared some pictures of her and condolences rolled in from about a dozen people who were regulars in that tight knit community. It wasn't just "drop a comment and move on to the next post on reddit," where you might never see someone again. Everyone knew everyone, and even little things like having an avatar picture on the forum led to greater and faster recognition. On forums, who you're talking to matters at least as much as the subject matter, if not more.

you could claim discord allows for this as well, but discord is still an unorganised and faster paced and poorly searchable firehose for the most part that in practice serves more like an eviller version of IRC with centralised logging so the feds can find you easier, rather than a place where people can just stop in for even just 5 to 15 minutes a day and catch up with each other and not miss much.
