@sophieschmieg "We trained our neural net on thousands of images of lava lamps and can now generate an endless series of random numbers!"

I see this, and also see all the people scrambling for work as they're laid off or worried about company ethics, and... I'll note it *is* possible to start your own company, or get together with some like-minded people and jointly start one.https://infosec.exchange/@briankrebs/113980130896539182

@log Sure, you're not going to start a small business and compete with a bazillionaire, but you don't have to? A lot of these business opportunities are small and limited enough that bazillionaires aren't going to care or notice. You can absolutely spin up a business, service a market, and comfortably pay your bills.TBH the prevailing wisdom that you *have* to have lots of money and grow fast is deeply corrosive and stops a lot of people from starting something that's likely to be successful.

@log Sure, but none of this involves fighting the big money. (not that the big money is particularly invulnerable, amazing, or frankly even that clever) It's all doing things that the big money doesn't, and there's *plenty* of that.

I never thought "learn some sed or perl one-liner tricks" would be my #1 most useful bit of advice for people doing computer infrastructure work, but here we are and there we go.

@futurebird @llewelly I knew a bunch of hippie style anti-vaxxers when my kids were little. Something I noticed was that these folks *were* little-c conservative — while the things they believed, or at least practiced, were liberal, the *way* they practiced them and how they approached changing their minds about things were deeply conservative. I’ve noticed the same in CA, for example. Surface liberals but in an extremely rigid and unchanging way.

@futurebird I hadn’t really given much thought to how deeply nihilistic (or maybe sociopathic?) this theory is, but eesh it really is deeply problematic.

@ricci I suspect AWS going down would have the largest effect, though it would mostly manifest in media unavailability. A lot of servers use it on the back end for blob storage.

@davidgerard the amount of enthusiastic idiocy involved with all these LLM business integrations is really astonishing, even for someone as cynical about the capabilities of upper management as I am.

@futurebird @llewelly Free buses in NYC would be awesome. The systemic savings wouldn't be quite as big as if the subway went free as well (since the MTA still needs to maintain the whole fare collection infrastructure for that) but it'd still save on the hardware in the buses themselves. It's also total-cost-gated (there's a limit to how many people can fit in a bus) and progressive since (IIRC) bus ridership tends towards lower income folks.Pay for it with congestion charges!

@ColesStreetPothole @the_etrain Driving in Massachusetts is *easy* as long as you remember the two main rules -- traffic light turning red means no more than two more cars may go through the intersection, and also fuck you.

@ColesStreetPothole @the_etrain whenever I see someone from a state with wide streets and right angle intersections I think of this, which goes for lots of places that aren’t NYC:

@neil The worst part about the cloudflare outage is that even if you *are* self-hosting you may still be fronted by cloudflare as it's the only well-known free/affordable way to either fend off the AI bot swarm or expose a behind-the-firewall service to the outside.I'm using Cloudflare's free tunneling service and got burned by this but I don't know that there's any alternative (and setting that up myself is both even more work/expense and also more hassle and annoyance, which sucks)

Oh, god, I just referred to code an actual human being wrote as artisanal and I'm now simultaneously embarrassed and depressed for the future because I'm not sure it's satiric, ironic, or wrong.

"It's carbon-neutral, artisinal, free-range software" is no longer satirical, it just means I WFH and the house has solar panels.

@icedquinn I... OK, y'know, given all the stupidity around datacenters and their power draws I'd be fine if the SlopCenters were 100% solar powered. (Bonus points for rocketing them into the sun for higher efficiencies, though I admit that plan has a few difficulties I'm still working out)
