A US court installs spyware on devices of family man released on bond. Bond conditions deemed broken due to a flag in the spyware that was likely a false positive. The man’s young children were also surveilled & the family’s ability to speak with their attorneys via their devices. Punchline? The family foot the $19 a month bill for the spyware subscription!America, you are so very very broken. I know the UK has its issues but.. daaaaaamn. https://www.wired.com/story/anti-porn-covenant-eyes-bond-revoked/

@stux the whole Meta debacle is running a risk of breaking fedi before they even come onboard.. people are so worried about “embrace expand extinguish” that they’re burning down their own house before Zuck can. It’s truly crazy. I’m filtering and muting my own timeline to see if I can chip away at the noise and find that really friendly, welcoming, community we knew just a few months ago.

Installed Proton VPN on #Linux and it worked great. Then I disconnected and my DNS was shot. Proton broke my machine's ability to talk to DNS without being connected to Proton VPN. Simply uninstalling didn't work, had to kill its network connections that persisted after reboot. So yeah.. I'll be avoiding Proton for my VPN needs I think!

@EU_Commission “Not only will this make your life easier, but it will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and e-waste. “I’ve yet to see compelling evidence that this will be the case. I have many many devices and have never sound charge cables made my life difficult. We will see an ewaste bump with this as many cables and chargers become no longer useful.

@stux so much for an open web.. 😜I get it's a contentious issue and I agree with the concerns.. but what's the real benefit of blocking when the majority of our posts are fully, no log on required, publicly visible already? What privacy are we protecting there?Blocking also shuts off the likely large numbers of new users from being able too explore and experience the fediverse and THAT is a crying shame.

@rail @Raspberry_Pi Oh come on. They not just a person noodling around online. For better or, most likely, worse Threads was always going to be a massive platform. It makes sense from both the business and foundation side of rPi to have a presence there.

@esdin @eniko search is built as it is intentionally. It limits the ability for trolls and other unsavoury folk from seeking out people they want to attack or conversations they want to “dog-pile” into. It’s a massive benefit of the platform. Hashtags are a good way to find posts & folk with common interests though.

@stux I hope they do if this comes to pass, but also that they re-enable it for devices using VPNs with endpoints outside the UK rather than geo-locking based on physical device location.

@EU_Commission hmmm.. “zero tolerance” never actually works. I worry that undermines this. Of course no one should be having any sort of alcoholic drink then driving, but given many other foods and drinks can trigger a non-zero reading on a breath test how will this be realistically implemented? If there is an accepted level in breath test the it’s not “zero tolerance”, meaning your pitch here is a little misleading.

I get angry every time I hear polititians or police folk talking about the Online Safety Bill.Their lack of technological and cultural understanding of the thing they fear and try to control is alarming. How are they going to act once they realise all they've achieved is pushing folk they wanted to control even further out of their sight and grasp?Tell your friends and families about VPNs, folk. I recommend @mullvadnet but there are plenty others to try too.

@mullvadnet I'm thinking I'll write to my MP.It won't achieve much in any practical way, but I've had a useful response from them before & at least I'll feel like I said my piece.

@gvs @nxadm @mullvadnet not more but different.Problem is in the UK there is no viable option for a government that would actually be competent & capable.

@stux does anyone genuinely still think this? I foolishly hoped that noise died down when Jack Thompson finally got debarred 😊

Any #Linux distros that support broadcom WiFi hardware? Got a 2013 MacBook Pro I'd really like to get useful again. Mint and Xubuntu didn't work with b43 firmware cutter so far 🤔

@luisgulo good to know! I do tend to usually be on Ubuntu-based distros, so Debian being the root of all that might be a good fit! Thank you

@loke @mike replies really are key - ActivityPub integration without it feels incomplete. Flipboard comments on articles always felt like they were talking to no-one, having them become conversation starters on fedi would be super interesting.
