my head can come up with many reasons but my heart has no idea why anyone would use a language without garbage collection

mastodon should fix the bug where typos are invisible in the editing box but obvious on the timeline

of these 1600 commits, i saw about 5 that were labeled as being generated by gemini. otherwise i didn't notice any change in the tenor/tone of patches relative to 2-3 years ago

@cfbolz yes it was a bit excessive 😅 you know, in some ways i miss the setup that was common 20 years ago or so in which there was a mailing list with all changes to cvs, it was a great way to learn. of course now i have too much email and v8 moves too fast for that to work, but in the early days i did follow the v8 commits list

just saw someone argue that llvm cannot be used as backend for a wasm compiler that processes untrusted input, because "a maliciously crafted C, Rust or bitcode input file can cause arbitrary code to execute in LLVM" (https://llvm.org/docs/Security.html#what-is-considered-a-security-issue)what do we think, chat

@andrewrk but this is wild, there’s nothing different about a compiler here than, like, notepad reading untrusted txt files; seems like quite the capitulation

annoyed that 32 cores of compiler still take 15 minutes to build v8.

i cannot fully express the antipathy that i have to the ACM DL. the idea that the pdfs are now open, and therefore the rest of the thing should be more closed to compensate -- infuriating

i am not opposed to paying for things! i have dozens of media subscriptions, some for freely-available publications! but the acm dl has always rubbed me so wrong that i never join. the idea of a professional association sounds nice, i wish we had one!

i have just received an important message from jimbo wales:"We’re all proud to be leading the way and expanding access to knowledge globally. To make Wikipedia fully open while remaining financially sustainable, its set of services are now offered in two editions: Wikipedia Basic provides free, public access to all content, while Wikipedia Premium offers advanced tools and value-added services designed to support deeper discovery, analysis, and institutional research workflows."

the git maintainers have also weighed in:"The -p option to 'git log' is now part of Git Premium, to enhance the experience of historical software researchers. We will be approaching our next steps with a commitment to listening, care and deliberation. We will be evaluating how git experiences are working in practice, reviewing specific features and overall usability, expanding functionality, and where appropriate, transferring capabilities from Git Premium to Git Basic."
