There are people trying to fill the space in you that religion no longer occupies. They're mostly going to fill it with frustration, because frustration is enough to breed true believers in a cause. They'll tell you you're oppressed, can't get ahead, won't be treated fairly because {whatever}. They want to keep you frustrated, not to solve your problem. #ThingsIWishIKnewInMy20s

Economics: You want social ties and connection at least as much as you want efficient markets. You'd rather stay with a friend or get a ride from them instead of using AirBnB or Uber, but these may be less available to you because you've moved away to take a job. Always consider social connections + salary when making life decisions. Also, #remotework is way better than going to an office. Hybrid is 💩: all the negatives of both office and remote, few of the positives.#ThingsIWishIKnewInMy20s

@stux I love the spirit, but this is essentially asking activists to stop doing activism, right? This specific thing is a reasonable thing to suggest people stop doing, but I would absolutely expect certain people to continue because doing things like that is core to who they are.

@clive "If it bleeds, it leads" is an old saying, but when I was growing up, bad news wasn't pushed constantly by such multitudes of people to a device I keep in my pocket, along with demands that I "bear witness". The dramatic increase in frequency, volume, and sources, along with a lowering of minimum standards has to have an effect.

@clive @liferstate If you believe this guy, who makes a pretty damn persuasive case, the upset has more to do with what we lost when we replaced social ties with economic ties, putting markets where relationships used to be. @Roundtrip @clive Ignore the generated answers on Quora. They're using an old GPT3 model (davinci) which frequently makes stuff up. @lowqualityfacts Hey, I love your commentary and it brings me a lot of chuckles, but I have to say I think this missed the mark. It costs a billion dollars to bring a new drug to market these days. Not saying price gouging doesn't exist, but the manufacturing cost of any pharmaceutical that's not decades old has nearly nothing to do with the price. (Sorry, I'm just a weird nerd that gets triggered by my own particular things.)

@simon This is a good set of tips, and it's worth pointing out that Cade Metz has a history of subpar reporting, including a really nasty hit piece on Scott Alexander a little while back. I'm not saying the facts are wrong, but it's very likely a subset of the available facts, chosen selectively by someone who seems to believe "SV is just a bunch of weird nerds who need to be taken down a peg".
