@foone @aradiogurl Was I wrong to spend the last 35 years thinking of SD cards and SSDs as incredibly nice EPROMs? We spent a lot of time at age 10 considering what the future would be like when ROM vs RAM wasn’t the schoolyard argument, but ROMs would be replaced by PROMs, and in turn EPROMs and in turn EEPROMs, the holy grail. This is probably why I never gave CD-R much respect.

@foone Stop feeding it widescreen content then? If you’re using a DVB deocder, it has a crop mode. DVD players also have this.

@foone ooh we’re in my wheelhouse, this sounds funHave you even tried some ancient codecs from the MPEG-2 era, like Sorenson codec? Probably better just to go for H.261 instead.I think you went the wrong way by removing stereo — that makes it easier to maintain quality. (Same could be said for pixels instead of bitrate, I guess). Just go for all those joint-stereo hacks.Heh you’re not trying to reverse-engineer YouTube’s content ID by any chance? 🫠

@foone ooooh petty? Like extremely geekily petty?I think the true benchmark is dialup video, as invented by RealPlayer / RealMedia. It might take one or two layers of emulation and/or pre-conversion to get it encoded, but I think an “.rm” file can still be opened by VLC VideoLAN28.8k dialup meant a 24kbps total stream, with about 16 for video and 8 for audio. The video would have been about 80x60 — and loads of macroblocking within that, not a GIF level quality — with a variable frame rate depending on “motion energy”, but a nominal (maximum) rate of 8fps. But often dropping to 1fps or 0.5fps when action got Their RealPlayer client did some fun motion blurring, “tweening” frames to make this limit less painful.

@foone of course the 1-click solution would be to dive into China’s basement of VideoCD (VCD) collections from the 1990s and just buy the movie … though that’s still vaguely equivalent to “bad VHS”

@foone This is, somehow even now, the element of Steve Jobs’ legacy that is still underappreciated. There’s a reason the Apple II font looked better than CGA, EGA and VGA text modes. “Better” as in balanced, not necessarily technically superior.Even the Lisa system font vs Mac 1984 Chicago font shows the same evidence.

@foone To be fair, if it was less than 6 months from the August launch, you’d be sympathetic for reasons of upgrade pain … compatibility, reallyAnd things were slower then, right?

@foone I’m here for THIS discussion!I certainly disagreed with them — 3.1 was far less polished, but beloved by business. A lot of corporate SOEs (before they used that term?) stuck with it for years. But if it was just a home user? Then it felt no less valid than a “DOS is for real men” vibe that we got in the GUI wars or even the DOS-vs-Mac arguments for many long years.Win3.1 was the first of that “real men” GUI, and Windows NT 3.1 probably added a slice of authenticity to it — except I knew that none of them were running it. Much higher requirements.

@foone for me it was tied to the dawn of “multimedia PC” and CD-ROMsI can’t believe it was barely 4 years since the launch of QuickTime 1.0 in 1991 … but that lead time felt like a huge gapOne of the standard party tricks with Windows 95 was to play the Weezer music video off the CD-ROMAh, Sorenson video era
