@rato @StillIRise1963 It's very very real, and is entirely decoupled from your personal qualities. Boss is having a bad day? Odds are, they're going to take it out on the nearest non-white person. I've seen time after time the best workers get fired for having the wrong skin color. For *absolutely any interaction* the default treatment I get is positive or neutral, whereas I watch people with different skin color get nice words to their face, and the instant you're in the break room, it's slurs.

@thunderbird Who's funding the bandwidth and storage costs? This looks like a centralizing approach to a problem across a federated service, i.e., email providers' limitations on attachments (because cost!).What's the business model here? You know what they say about free services... if you're not the customer, you're the product.

@StillIRise1963 I look at photos of current and past wars, and what do I see? Children. We send children to fight and die for adults. The US works so hard to get them in uniform at 17, well before their brains have finished forming or been able to experience how the system works in whole.

@jhx pf is the best. super simple, easy, and literally about 3500x faster than ufw. Try adding a bunch of rules, like you'd do with a table in pf. UFW actually has a bug rn where if you're adding rules too fast it says it added it but silently drops them. Found that other day.

@foone Now someone needs to start a shell company with a really evil name and just publish the names of anyone who tries to buy stuff from it.

Have they added mobile support to GTK4 yet? (I could be out of date here; I use GTK3.)As a dev, I'm happy with GTK3, and the problem with GTK4 (imo) is that they're trying to adopt mobile idioms without the payoff of supporting mobile platforms. Just makes it harder to write something in GTK4 than GTK3.

Whatever algorithm Steam is using to validate downloaded game content is terrible. It's going at ~0.5 MB/s. I don't know what algorithm they're using, but that performance is garbage. This machine bottlenecks on the drive at ~6 GB/s, RAM at ~18 GB/s, and a CPU core at 126 GB/s (if you're making use of all the AVX2 ports). The same thing applies to when Steam launches. I get a full 5 minutes of cursor stuttering and the system is unusable.

I'm not even sure what we're paying for with newer computers, because the software is literally getting slower.I hate to admit it, but Niklaus Wirth was right and Joe Armstrong was wrong (on this particular point).Joe said wait 10 years if you wanted your code to run faster. Niklaus said in 10 years people will have written even slower software.Wirth's Law wins this round.

I'm waiting for it to finish validating less than a CD's worth of data (629 MB) and it's still only at 161 MB as I sit here gripe-tooting.If I wrote this code and put it into production, I would fire me. It's that bad.

Signs your library may not be ready for production usage in the wild:Your documentation doesn't say what file(s) to include or import.Your examples use types and functions you don't explain anywhere.

@foone Yep, although inevitably in the reverse of that order for me. Always find the complicated way and then I have to put on my thinking cap to turn it into something not-so-bad.

What I want to know why does NYC "bus in" so many cops who don't live there to apply state violence to the people that actually do live there?Getting state violenced by someone who doesn't even live there shouldn't be a thing.#ACAB #mercenaries

Level Zero: Extraction looks fun, but it seems like they've locked it to Windows (the typical reason for this is not because Linux can't run Windows games, but because kernel-hooking DRM/anticheat).*sigh*#gaming #levelZeroExtraction #Linux
