Today's #AdventOfCode was the most fun so far this year. Of course they'd take away my CS PhD if I couldn't write a tree class! But one thing I've learned doing these puzzles is that data structures like trees and linked lists are a LOT easier to write in modern languages like Python than they were when I was first writing them in Pascal.

@grammargirl @lexfri The most recent episode of The Allusionist was all about the passive voice when talking about slavery in the US. (Example: "People were held in bondage here.") I'm not sure how much I agreed with the guest, but it was certainly thought-provoking. https://www.theallusionist.org/allusionist/actively-passive

@lowqualityfacts @andrew I’m curious why you think dogs are *not* telepathic.

@grammargirl -er at the end of a French word is pronounced AYE, so “taxer” is pronounced tax-aye. It roughly rhymes with “cascade” only without the “d” sound at the end. Most French infinitives end with -er, so this is something most French students learn to pronounce very early on!

@grammargirl I work adjacent to a health system and that's our official policy! (They just stopped requiring masks everywhere in the past week or two.)That said, I had big problems with my glasses fogging up during exams when I was wearing a mask, and was glad when they said it was OK to remove it because we were all recently vaccinated. Did you have any problems like that?

@grammargirl Those are nice! We've got a stash of regular surgical-style masks at work that I've been using, but I'll keep those in mind if I need to get on an airplane.

@grammargirl I just listened to this week’s podcast and I have a couple of things to add about "et al.”. First, I'm also in academia, and one thing I've heard people say instead of “and others" is "and colleagues". I think I like that better, especially in non-academic settings like podcasts. Also, what are your thoughts on whether “et al." should be in italics? My postdoc advisor did that, and it always looked wrong to me. (He also italicized "etc.”, which looks even more wrong!)

@grammargirl That's certainly the rule I learned about foreign words. I think it might have been a house style at some publications, but I'm not sure. Mostly I figured since it was his lab, I'd let him set the rules. Gotta pick your battles!

@grammargirl If you bleeped it out would people still be able to get the gist of it?

@grammargirl Good point, I can just imagine the conversations in the minivan: “Mom, why did Grammar Girl bleep that word?”

@ZachWeinersmith @Flux I'm not following producing a weekly 2 hour live radio show for the better part of 42 years is less work than writing novels.
