@codewiz, I don't even know how to install one, and I've been a fulltime KDE user since Ubuntu 10, or whichever was the last decent Ubuntu version before all the Unity and Mir crazyness. But then... I do run make build and manually copy one modified plugin, I never bothered with the UI installer.

@codewiz, this is one of the problem with systems developed and maintained by geeks. If their use case works, they don't even bother checking other scenarios, that's why a proper team is needed. And I'm hoping that the Purism, System76, Pine64, Fairphone and all the other companies will fill in the gaps that are not covered by usual FLOSS contributors.

The Senate of Romania just passed a new law that forces all internet and telecom providers to record all encrypted and un-ecrypted traffic, on their cost, and also provide a way for the Romanian Intelligence Service to extract the data "as needed".The new 100 page law was provided for review 10 minutes before the session and it was passed after 30 minutes of "debate". But there is good news...https://apti.ro/senatul-adopta-din-nou-largirea-interceptarii

The good news is the fact that the law will be challenged at the Constitutional Court of Romania and probably it will never be applied.Experts say it has many issues, but the most obvious one is that they've used words that don't exist in the Romanian language. They've probably used #GoogleTranslate to get the translation for "encrypted" and they got a word that doesn't exist in our language: "cripat".Thank you #Google, #DoNotBeEvil

I don't speak legalese, but, it seems that the RO government wants all hosting providers to turn-over SSH keys on request. And this applies to all RO hosting providers or those that have romanian clients. FAANG/MANGA not excluded. Also, ANY law enforcement agency can ask this, they just need the proper reason. For those who speak RO and don't need a screen reader, this is the notification submitted to the constituational court:https://senat.ro/legis/PDF/2021/21L532SC.PDF

@wolf480pl, seem my followup pots in this thread. They don't seem to want this law to be admitted, it has like a million issues with it, but they are probably pulling a #trump move on us, normalizing extremes and then they get what they want. Also, in the notification submitted to the constitutional court, they mentioned like 10 different EU directives that are not respected and they've also mentioned several ECHR rulings that would clash with this law.

@rysiek @lattera, good points, but what should one use? Network hardware and software don't really have a spotless track record when it comes to respecting standards. And I'm wondering if, at home, we could use:1) an IP outside the DHCP range2) an IP outside the subnet mask3) an IP in a reserved block like 240.0.0.0/4 from RFC-6890 Table 15: Reserved for Future UseI'm not sure if I'm missing something or I should RTFM, but these sound like viable alternatives. Though…1/2

@rysiek @lattera,… people should check the behavior of their home router before using these approaches. Also, for IPv6, we have a reserved Discard-Only address block: 100::/64. This is defined in the same RFC-6890, in Table 21: Discard-Only Prefix. And from what I can tell, this address block seems to be perfectly suited for a DNS-based ad-blocking mechanism. And it should be much safer than the hackish approaches available for IPv4.2/2

@mansr, ouch... so, the IPv6 Discard-Only address block would have the same issue. Good to know. Thanks!@rysiek @lattera

In a parallel universe, where John Deere is a Russian company, those UA farmers can't tow away those tanks. If they didn't disconnect in time or they've accidentally enabled the connection, there is no more towing for them. With everything on the internet, they've got a #TowBan and a #PlowBanWe're not in that universe, so we only have a #RepairBan, but are you sure you want to give up on your popcorn in time of war? #InternetOfTargets #IOT

Oh wow, maybe I need some sort of "thread composer". The character limit over here is not helping. Especially if you start a thread on a mobile device. Also, didn't we get a new "I need to fix the spelling" feature on Mastodon? Where's that "Edit this Toot" button?

Here's the thing, the fancy-looking unicode characters almost never create words on their own, especially not those from the web, gemini or IMs, nor the ones for STEM fields.A rudimentary look ahead "algorithm" can toggle transliteration on and off. We have transliteration mappings in every web CMS that deals with user uploaded files, because they need clean paths for SEO, just take the mappings from Drupal.#a11ycc: @lena @aral @devinprater

Researching ways to improve screen readers is fun, but now, besides helping existing projects, I'll need to create new code and stuff, and I REALLY need to find decent #licenses, but the internet is a mess, and I can't find anything helpful.I also stumbled upon BusyBox (GPL-2.0-or-later) vs Toybox (0BSD). Toybox is everywhere in Android, BusyBox not so much, but it's in #Debian.I don't speak legalese, is there something like: https://rxjs.dev/operator-decision-tree ?#GPL2orLater vs #0BSD vs #DualLicense?

@rigo @bortzmeyer, I'm halfway through the document and I've seen no mention of Ukrainian ISPs in Crimea before February 24th 2022.So I searched for various terms, thinking that it will show up later in the document. But to my surprise, in a document about internet fragmentation, there's no mention of Crimea. I find it hard to believe that the authors didn't hear about this or didn't find it relevant. This is troubling, to say the least.

Remember that whenever you see "sandboxes" in the context of software security, it's almost always a placeholder for "our hyper-safe, web-scale — we didn't learn history — IPC"As for "containers", it's always something on these lines: "we're just doing what everybody was doing before POSIX, but we just added a few more layer on top — to hide things, you know‽ — Also, your secrets are safe with us, in plaintext!"#TrustMeImAnEngineer #fnord

@gme, I guess so, I'm not sure, but there were intensive talks about DST in the EU, if they've done something about that, then there's a deadline for when countries should change their laws and select a permanent timezone, either DST or non-DST, but it should be permanent.

@adam, don't throw it away. It should be easy to use a continuity tester or just eyeball it to see where those capacitors go. Once you do that, you should find an IC that is close enough, search for the datasheet of that IC and one of the default schematics should show a set of capacitors and resistors that have the similar layout. These days, most devices just blindly copy one of the proposed schematics from the datasheet without taking into consideration the whole devices.
