@isucceed @BrentToderian I would rather a violent person was armed with a baseball bat and not a machine gun

@isucceed @BrentToderian ahh, so in your eyes a psycho armed with a machine gun is not obviously worse than a psycho armed with a baseball bat? Why don't countries arm their soldiers with baseball bats then? Save a lot of money and they'll never run out of ammo!

@threat @isucceed @BrentToderian I'm sure most gun owners in the US are very responsible. I mean that sincerely. The problem (as I see it as a foreigner not living in North America) is that a minority are irresponsible/violent, and that they should be denied easy access to guns. That's hard to do in the USA now, because there are so many guns.I think the USA, should implement registration of guns, and people with a violent history would be prevented from getting a gun license. You need a gun amnesty, and offer to buy unlicensed guns from people, no questions asked. Licensed firearms need to be kept in a gun-safe when not being used. This is what was done in Australia in the late 90s, and there has been almost no gun crime since.Responsible and non-violent gun owners (probably most of them) can keep their guns. I imagine you'll object to this, because I presume it's been suggested before (I'm not across the debate). Why is this idea a no-go? (genuine question)

@johnquiggin thanks for writing this. I've heard nothing in the media about how technology is likely to render the subs obsolete before they're made and it's good to hear someone saying it. AUVs are developing to quickly, and will be so much cheaper, that I wonder if *any* human operated submarines will be manufactured (or wanted) in the 2030s

@johnquiggin I wonder if it's partially explained by Australia's more-even wealth distribution*? Perhaps this means there are fewer disenfranchised, impoverished people looking for someone to blame* I know: it's worse than I'd like it to be, and worse than it used to be, but still significantly better than both the UK and US.

@lowqualityfacts when I studied "body systems" ( anatomy) I was quite blown away when the teacher explained that penguins actually do fly - they just do it underwater

@eliptic I'm not an expert but have had an ebike for more than a decade. If you get a hub motor in a front wheel, it's fairly easy to swap in and out as needed

straw poll - how long until a serious economic downturn, worse than the GFC and maybe similar in scale to the Great Depression?I'm genuinely interested to know what the perceptive people in the fediverse think, so please boost if you feel like it

@stib is totally right, sadly. For gravity storage of energy, you need a lot of mass (like a dam full of water) and 50 - 100m of elevation change ("pumped hydro")Some interesting work has been done with high speed flywheels (at 100000s rpms), but I think not for home storage (more for grid-level stabilisation). Also, you really don't want it to break at speed! ;-)@ewen

I sat in my “outside room” this morning, I watched the candlelight flicker against the undersides of the trees, the moon rise, and the sky become light. I saw the clouds crossing the sky and heard the birds awaken

@keira_reckons this is timely - I fell from a ladder this week. I've accessed my roof space with this ladder dozens of times, but this time I didn't set it up properly and it slipped and fell away beneath me. I managed to catch myself on the manhole, so didn't fall, but it was a wake-up call.

@syntaxseed I wouldn't claim to have the answer, but FWIW my kids have been catching public transport to school since they were about 10. I got them both an android phone, and use the parental controls to restrict what they can do on the phone, as well as how long they can spend using it each day. We've certainly had a few problems, and boundaries are continually pushed, but on the whole I think it's worked reasonably well 🙂EDIT: I'm in Australia, but I found them a super-cheap plan that's ~$130/year (sim only)
