Given today’s news about Twitter nearing a deal with Musk, there has been a significant trend of people and whole communities announcing they will be leaving twitter for mastodon and have new accounts… on mastodon.social. We have utterly failed.

@kline @GeoffWozniak And I’m over here thinking that people should be planning out and thinking through the software they are going to write in non-real time and separately from the moment of actually entering lines of code in an editor, and that the people I knew with the least friction between their brain and the compiler wrote the most horrendous to maintain spaghetti nests and were my least favorite coworkers.

It’s beyond me how to make such a thing but I think it’s a critical gap.

@cstanhope @theruran I think that's actually the dominant reason for machine learning research and it's increasing capitalization. It's seen as a short-cut around having to do the work of understanding any particular aspect of reality. Which is of course a terrifying ideology.

@msh I want to double-down on the idea that journalists doing just-in-time information sharing on twitter was one of the backbones of the information ecosystem that was standing in the way of widespread media manipulation and far right information operations, and they are coming to mastodon because that ecosystem is being actively disrupted. I’ve already seen coordinated attempts here to drive journalists off of masto and it would be a big boon to the haters if that were to happen.
