@grammargirl I so wish my school had taught us about this! As it was they were in a phase of not really even doing times tables, and they never even mentioned number bonds - my Mam had to show me those, and chant times tables with me on the way to school.I sometimes think that the whole idea of maths education in the seventies was to make it harder, and remove all aids. And yet every mathematician I know has a whole array of tricks and shortcuts, and uses them All The Time!

@grammargirl That was Old Fashioned Rote Learning and was very much not a thing. I wish it had been, not least as memory training!

I have a challenge before me. The main Amarna pieces consist of two large panels, colour-blocked and "spotted" with embroideries representing stories, finds or people from the book "Nefertiti Lived Here". This will have overlays of gauze showing the heads of Akhenaten and Nefertiti, but importantly, I want the overlays not to touch the embroidery, and to be removable. So how can I attach the overlays? Or how can I mount them (as unobtrusively as possible, not with a great heavy frame) so that they are easy for the viewer to "open" away, or haul out of the way, or something?Ideas? Advice? Engineering suggestions? #DreamsOfAmarna #MountingMyWork

@penguin42 The main embroideries are mounted on wood - are there magnets strong enough to work through two inches of beech that are weak enough for a human to break the connection?

@penguin42 @kw217 That sounds better. I've spent twenty years on these and glue makes me nervous!

I'm reading up on #Aethelflaed, and the author keeps referring to her shaping of the Midlands. Brought up in Chester, I've always thought of myself as a northern lass, and I keep being knocked off my balance.Mind you, my Geordie mother agrees with the author!

I need to make, or have made, some strong, stiff, light frames for the gauze overlays. The current suggestion is to use some steel with an incomplete square cross section, and then find some way to attach the gauze. Can anyone suggest solutions to either of these challenges?I'm in the north west of the UK, near to Liverpool.#MakingChallenge #PreparingToDisplay

Since my blog is catching up with my stitching, I thought I would revisit Stella's Birds..The inspirations are Elizabeth Goudge's book, "Gentian Hill", medieval imagery and Mountmellick embroidery. That's quite a lot to juggle, isn't it!#HandEmbroidery #StellasBirds #MountmellickEmbroidery

@nanook My process is iterative, too. I do a lot of rough, separate sketches, and try to learn the shape of the line I want. What you see here is the endpoint of that process. But not the end of the work, because this is a design for embroidery!
