"copyright benefits corporations more than independent artists" is correct today but it also doesn't strike the root of why copyright is wrong. it's not hard to imagine a paradigm where corporations don't exist at all but a system of copyright still exists for creatives to extract rents from, constraining and centralizing artistic expression. even if its enforced by social pressure instead of law. the claim that ideas and information can be owned at all should be attacked directly.

one of my favorite photos is this org chart showing how complex and messy that relationships between individuals in and around an org can be. and in turn how the structure and shared narrative of an org oversimplifies and suppresses them.(sorry for the quality)

i've noticed more people talking about national divorce --- secession --- on here and while there are lots of good practical and moral objections to the idea i also think the core desire of pushing out conservatives or liberals from an area to politically purify it is wrongheaded.i don't want conservatives to secede, i want to take away their power & help create a society where i can tell a conservative saying dumb things about gender to fuck off and then repress the memory of our meeting with video games and fanfiction instead of worrying about them broadly as a voting bloc. that's really what individual liberty is all about tbh.

@niconiconi when miku said "blue hair, blue tie, hiding in your wifi" in that one song it was subtle foreshadowing of the lastpass leaks, which she did

@moon the author's rationalizations are so wacky. why do you need windex cramming cleaning ads into the show to pull you away when you could exercise some agency and stop or pause instead?

Sometimes I read critiques of decentralizing moderation that argue it's an attempt by developers to avoid taking responsibility for moderation and pushing it onto users.I think that's silly. You might be able to argue this if all the users on corporate socials have are mute and block functions, which are always inadequate and ultimately preserves the power of admins by design. But the assumption here is that we need centralized moderation that is responsive, accountable, and practices good governance. This is a fantasy; it doesn't work and it never will. The past decade of social media proves it. Why shouldn't users take responsibility for their feeds, and have the tools to do so? Why shouldn't there be a system like the fedi where multiple admins can set up shop with their own mods? Do you think it's possible or desirable for website boy and mastodon.social mods to moderate the entire Mastodon network when they struggle doing it on their own server?

I feel like when people hear decentralization in a tech context their brains go "ahh, libertarian techbro outgroup shit" and then stop thinking afterward, regardless of if the idea is good or not.

the proper way to use the bookmark function on mastodon is to bookmark a post you think is important and then forget about it immediately

one of the most demoralizing things about copyright i've looked at recently was a socialist on the birdsite talking about how, in a socialist society, artists could meet their needs without copyright. a majority of artists in their thread responded by saying "actually i would still want copyright law anyway because i made that art and i deserve to monopolize it"there's a point where IP abolitionists must realize that the big corporate publishers & software companies aren't our only opponents. many left-leaning creatives have created their own popular support for copyright over the past fifteen years. this support is founded on myths and backward analysis (i.e. "copyright was invented to protect small creators from corporations"), but also a desire for monopoly and control that some of them share with the corporations. these creatives are wrong and you should say so, and not be guilt-tripped into believing otherwise.#intellectualpropertyistheft

I remember hearing somewhere that the reason why Nintendo's so gung-ho about emulation is that they view their older titles as competition against their new ones. That seems like a common-enough view across the industry. It's not enough for game monopolists to attack fangames and original titles with patented mechanics; they want to control the past.#intellectualpropertyisthefthttps://www.gamesradar.com/games/publishers-are-absolutely-terrified-preserved-video-games-would-be-used-for-recreational-purposes-so-the-us-copyright-office-has-struck-down-a-major-effort-for-game-preservation/

> "Dear so-called "social" websites.> Your catchword is "share", but you don't want us to share. You want to keep us within your walled gardens. That's why you've been removing RSS links from webpages, hiding them deep on your website, or removed feeds entirely, replacing it with crippled or demented proprietary API. FUCK YOU.> You're not social when you hamper sharing by removing feeds. You're happy to have customers creating content for your ecosystem, but you don't want this content out - a content you do not even own. Google Takeout is just a gimmick. We want our data to flow, we want RSS or Atom feeds.> We want to share with friends, using open protocols: RSS, Atom, XMPP, whatever. Because no one wants to have your service with your applications using your API force-feeding them. Friends must be free to choose whatever software and service they want.> We are rebuilding bridges you have willfully destroyed.> Get your shit together: Put RSS/Atom back in."-- RSS-Bridge
