Regarding GitLab, you should be able to read a project's readme without enabling JS on the site.Regarding Pleroma, FunkWhale, PeerTube, and so on, you should be able to read an instance's rules without enabling JS on the site.I shouldn't have to run programming code just to find out what a website is about.#MakeJavaScriptOptional

This is why I hate GitLab so much. I always groan when I go to a project page and find it's on self-hosted GitLab. I'm glad you're self-hosting, but it would be much better to use something like Gitea which doesn't require JS for the most basic tasks like finding out what your program does.

I'm interested in using @Liberapay but I'm not interested in using proprietary software in the process. If I bite the bullet and run the non-free Stripe code to sign up for an account, is it possible to operate with only free software from then on? Specifically, can these two things be done via #Liberapay with #Stripe as the payment method?1) Can people donate without non-free JS?2) Can people receive donations without non-free JS?Thanks in advance for any insight.

Are there any universities which exclusively use free software? Or at least do not require students to use any proprietary software?#university #college #freesoftware #opensource #foss #floss #education

@haskal @hazel I ran a personal Matrix server (just a handful of accounts) on a computer with lower specs than that. It worked but was slow. I don't know how much to attribute that to the computer and how much is just... Synapse.

@redstarfish One thing I see a lot is guides that involve installing free software from RPMFusion instructing users to enable the nonfree RPMFusion repository, even though they don't need it. (Example, VLC: https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-fedora.html)

@dwc I don't know about video (something I still need to learn myself), but to convert to ogg audio, use -vn:ffmpeg -i inputfile.mp3 -vn outputfile.oggYou can also use other parameters to adjust the sound quality, but default is usually good enough for audio (but not for video) in my experience.

@redstarfish @dwc I think generally yes, but there are probably other factors too.

Proposal: Change the abbreviation for "man-in-the-middle" to MIMTM. What's the extra M for? It's the man in the middle.

Sometimes people say things like "Doing X is pointless because you're still doing Y." (For example, I saw a discussion of free software where someone went off about how having a fully free OS was pointless because you're just going to use it to access Facebook, etc. anyway.)1. A lot of positive change happens incrementally. Don't disparage that just because "it's not instantly perfect, so you should give up."2. Who says I'm doing Y?

How disorienting would it be if you found yourself in a "mirror" universe where everything was the same, except left and right were switched? If you went to unfamiliar places, it wouldn't be too hard to deal with, but imagine being in your own home or town, somewhere you know by heart, and having to acclimate to the idea that everything is on the opposite side from where you expect it to be.

Thanks to @redstarfish making me think about it more, I've gotten a lot better about converting mp3s I download to ogg before listening.

Say you want to listen to https://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/25818.Take that last bit, 25818. That's the feed ID. The "direct stream link" is at https://audio.broadcastify.com/25818.mp3 but that requires authentication...There is, however, a feed served from https://broadcastify.cdnstream1.com/25818 that doesn't require authentication. Just plug in the feed identifier for the feed you want instead of 25818 to listen to a different stream.

This is probably a very simple answer, but I'm having trouble even wording the question in a way that will yield relevant search results.I want to write something in my Apache config files that gets a substring of a variable. Specifically, if %{REQUEST_URI} begins with "/index.php" I want an expression that is the rest of %{REQUEST_URI} after that bit.In bash terms, I want ${REQUEST_URI#/index.php}How can I do this?

If you use GNU/Linux what are the distro(s) you use based on? I'm curious what the breakdown is, particularly just how many people on here use a Debian-based distro.(Debian-based includes Ubuntu, PureOS, Trisquel, Linux Mint, elementary OS, Pop!_OS...RPM-based includes Fedora, RHEL, CentOS, openSUSE...Arch-based includes Manjaro, Parabola, Hyperbola...)(If you use GNU/Hurd you can answer too.)

The thing is, Satanic metal and Christian metal often use a lot of the same words and symbolism, so it can be difficult to tell what you're getting into.
