The news is really bad at telling me about things I need to know, and really good at telling me stupid sports and pop culture stuff.Fedi is good at telling me about horrifying news that I can't do anything about, or even compensate for.

I'm glad I don't have the "do everything in the terminal" urge that some of you have. I got over that years ago. It meshes really poorly with every modern app being web-based, with graphics.

It seems like most everyone who prefers standalone WMs over full DEs these days, also prefers tiling over stacking. Like, nobody much cares about openbox and fluxbox anymore.

#OpenBSD ships xlockmore (`xlock` command) in base. This has the nice feature where it can be configured for a custom screen power off delay while the screen is locked, independent of the normal setting that you use while unlocked. On #Debian, I miss that. I want my screen to be off when locked, and on when unlocked. Gnome does this by default, but I use MATE. I might also switch to some standalone WM, and Debian doesn't ship xlockmore. xscreensaver doesn't support this option.

Want to feel old? The album Monster by R.E.M. turns 30 this year. Remember hearing "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" all the time?

@twizzay Somehow that reminds me of Professor Farnsworth from the Simpsons.

@twizzay How about poke salad. You have to boil it three times in new water to not be poisoned. How was somebody that persistent? "I boiled it twice and got sick, oh well let's try three times"

I fear sometimes that the Scientific Mindset is not permanently part of our culture. That the idea that Things Make Sense if you do the work to figure them out, will go out of style. There is a certain kind of person who wants to destroy this mindset. Who wants us to think that the world is mysterious and arbitrary. Because that lets them trick us into giving them power over us.

I bought kefir at the store today. I've never had it before. Apparently it's like drinkable yogurt. And I should expect it to make me fart tremendously.

If you claim that the experts on a subject are wrong about it, you better have some evidence.

I don't like companies getting interested in Fedi. You bring the profit motive in here and you'll ruin it for everyone.

@foone I just used the phrase "to eat crow" and my phone was sure I meant "to eat a crow". Like literally? I don't think crows would be very tasty.
