@lauren @SonofaGeorge Can we talk about the square cube law, then? NB, I assume you *do* know about that.

@lauren In other news, the jet stream was discovered to point from Asia to North America. 😁

@kairyssdal Good article. The development of the missile is the subject of the book “Sidewinder” by Ron Westrum. Recommended. The book also details some scary QA problems with Vietnam era missile production.

@lauren @wordshaper That wasn’t written by Isaac Asimov or Robert Heinlein, so a vanishingly small chance that Musk has read it.

@Teri_Kanefield I have learned something, reading you all these months. When I read your assumption that leaks are from Team Trump, I thought, “of course.” Then I realized I knew that because of your postings. Thanks again!

@kairyssdal thank you for sharing. I am not an economist, but don’t other factors influence the economy, even in the orthodox view? For example, government stimulus?Likewise, external price shocks drive inflation, as we learned in ‘73 and ‘79.

@Teri_Kanefield Also, a reminder that you shouldn’t text or email things you don’t want to see in a court filing. Or on the front page of the NYT.

SVB prediction. Some startups were always going to fail in 2023. Maybe even a lot of them. These are private companies. No audited financials. When they fail, the founders will spin it as “we could have been a contender, but for SVB and the bank run.” False but oh so convenient. See also: press coverage of 2001 dotcom bubble popping, which was near 9/11. And 9/11 took a lot of the blame at the time. Not bad biz plans etc.

@tante ChatGPT could write convincing emails to convince people in purchasing to buy all the hardware for a GOU-heavy data center. Then write PowerPoints to program manage the buildout. Hmmm. Don’t see this. Much more likely horror scenario:Criminals use ChatGPT to refine their social engineering, bilking large corporations by sending fake invoices, etc. Companies bury these payments in SEC filings with opaque language. ProPublica breaks story in 2027.

@benjaminhollon Does “defective from the beginning” include designing for a two year lifetime? Say for electromigration on a cell phone processor. Not trying to argue. Want to understand your POV. I used to work on Apps Processors and the above was the reliability standard of some of the customers.

@benjaminhollon Got it. Short answer, the example I gave was defective by design as you define it. Long answer: electromigration means the metal lines on the chip (wires) fail after you run current through them. They act like fuses. But not during surges, like human scale fuses in your house. No, just by wearing out in use. You can make the metal lines more resistant to electromigration by making them bigger. But that makes chips & phones cost more.

@Houl 8 micron NMOS. 😳I thought I was in the business a long time, and the first technology I worked on was 1.2 um CMOS in 1983. My first CPU was a CMOS clone of the AMD 2901 bit slice.
