It's my belief that if an electronic device needs replacing within four years—for any reason—it was defective from the beginning.

@paco @benjaminhollon Electrical efficiency is pointless if the item has to be replaced every few years, as that too is a huge waste of resources and causes even more pollution.

@benjaminhollon Does “defective from the beginning” include designing for a two year lifetime? Say for electromigration on a cell phone processor. Not trying to argue. Want to understand your POV. I used to work on Apps Processors and the above was the reliability standard of some of the customers.

@trollballI probably would include that, except for very specific exceptions (not sure what all "electromigration" entails). If electronics are designed for a short lifespan, I'd say they're defective by design. (Assuming it *is* possible for them to last longer—and even then if it can't last longer I'm not sure we should be using it.)The point is largely about sustainability, so that is the perspective I'm coming at it from.

@benjaminhollon Got it. Short answer, the example I gave was defective by design as you define it. Long answer: electromigration means the metal lines on the chip (wires) fail after you run current through them. They act like fuses. But not during surges, like human scale fuses in your house. No, just by wearing out in use. You can make the metal lines more resistant to electromigration by making them bigger. But that makes chips & phones cost more.

@trollballThis is true. I'd argue that in the long run, though, they end up costing less because you don't have to replace them as often. They at least cost less from a conservation standpoint.I did not know about this property of electronic devices, thanks for bringing it to my attention! I'm always up for learning something new. :D

@trollballNow that I think about it a bit; buying shorter-life devices because they're cheaper is, in a sense, treating them as disposable. While they're not "defective" in the sense of their intended disposable use, I would say that use itself is a defective mindset for technology use.

@3dcandyHmm, that's a bit trickier.I'd say it's not the manufacturer's fault if:- Batteries are easily replaceable apart from the main device- Appropriate control is given to the owners to allow them to make the most of the batteries they have; the ability to set battery charge limits, etc. I'd also hope they make people aware of the impact of, say, charging a battry overnight on its overall lifetime.

@benjaminhollon .Sadly not for most things ,a lot of stuff isnt built to last more than a few years so even a tiny repair isnt possible ,because the skills needed to repair them arent widespread or the cost of repairs would pre prohibitive ,sometimes there arent spare parts manufactured anyway ,or in some cases with modern techology items because they will become hard to update etc.But I agree if its something like a cooker or mattress or something similar

@benjaminhollon The number of people on Reddit on their 3rd Fitbit in 2 years is absolutely shocking. And in the US, the warranty is a meager 12 months. If the "free" replacement dies outside of the original 12 month window (e.g., unit 1 dies after 7 months, and unit 2 dies after a further 6 months), they won't replace it! You just get a 35% off code for the Fitbit website.

@benjaminhollon @ulidig ..interestingly enough, Amazon probably has more of a motive than most to design their devices to last. They probably use the same hardware between the ad-ridden versions and the "premium" ones. The ad-ridden ones are, to my understanding, _sold at a loss!_ Because they make money based on *how long you use it*, and lose money when you have to replace it...There's a depressing argument that this is the closest American capitalism gets to proper incentives :/

@benjaminhollon In desktops/laptops stopping work only after 4-5 years is really a bad design. On phones due to how fast the processing power gets better and better(and other things), porting back a new android version gets harder and harder.

@cristiioanHey, a Framework is a great starting point; that's what I use.For a phone… my method at the moment is to use handed-down or used phones only. Eventually I might look into getting something like a Fairphone.Long-run, I'd love to use a Linux phone like the PinePhone once software support gets good enough for those.

@cristiioanWe'll see. :PNice thing is once I'm done with uni, if I do end up succesfully getting into writing full time, my mobile requirements will lower since I have no external organization requiring me to use certain apps. For my own personal use, I hardly use my phone at all and a linux phone could likely work with a bit of effort.

@benjaminhollon I'm using one daily for over 500 days now. So many things are a lot harder to do on it that I cam to the conclusion once I can buy a new phone that I won't touch a linux phone for atleast another 3 years. The big development on linux phones it happens in like short bursts of 2-3 months and than it slows down for like 6

@benjaminhollon My wife and I are both on iPhone SE 2 and once these babies die we are switching to Android. (De googled in my case.) :android: AFAIK this is the last iPhone with right to repair. Likewise her laptop is a mid 2012 MBP. Which was the last model to allow upgrades to RAM, SSD, replacement batteries, screen repairs etc.It just EOL’d with software support in the last year, so, I will probably inherit it as a linux laptop and trade out my 2010 MBP that I am running :debian: on right now once it starts getting too buggy for her to tolerate. In a coming age we will have zero Apple :apple_inc: devices in our home simply because we refuse to buy anything that cant be upgraded or repaired. And we preach that liberally to our friends and family.

@lamp @benjaminhollon Thanks for asking this, actually. I discovered that I had bad information.I edited my original post. When we bought our iPhone’s we looked at some reviews that were showing that newer models of iPhone were having problems repairing simple things like the screen, batteries, and cameras. Apple has been serializing parts for a while now. If you don’t do some special hacking, (i.e demicrosoldering and remicrosoldering a lil chip) then when you put your phone back together new parts might just entirely refuse to work.Apparently, this affects all models of iPhone (mine included.) but each a little differently.

@twizzay @benjaminhollon I was pretty ticked at Apple for removing the ability to upgrade RAM and SSD. But as the owner of many Apple products today, I guess the sacrifice to that is that (IMO) no other company is matching Apple's hardware design and M chip performance. Android is STILL a mess ran by a pretty terrible company with terrible long term support, while all manufacturers just copying what Apple does anyway. It's a game of "lesser of two evils" at this point.

@teamtuck @benjaminhollon > Android is STILL a mess ran by a pretty terrible company with terrible long term support, while all manufacturers just copying what Apple does anyway.meh it goes both ways. Companies always be copying other companies. However, I think it's important to remember that software does not and should not need to be tied to hardware. :gnulightened: Apple tries really hard to make this the case. But :android: phones don't need to run android. And PCs don't need to run macOS or windows. iPhones, however, do, to some degree, need to run IOS. And that is dumb.I still recommend Apple to computer illiterate people, though, because Apple's greatest strength, IMO, is their ability to protect even the most ignorant users. But to anyone who uses a computer for more than 20 hours a week, I recommend getting a solid PC and putting (at the very least) the current ubuntu :ubuntu: on it. Most home users don't fall into this category.

@twizzay @benjaminhollon In a perfect world, hardware and software wouldn't be exclusive, just like console exclusive games not being available on the PC lol. I would LOVE to have iPhone hardware and have the ability to dual boot iOS and Android personally, just to keep up with the times I guess.Apple has been a solid choice for us simply because it has caused the least issues. And after working on Windows/Azure all day, it's nice to not be IT Admin at home. :)

@Qper @twizzayI've heard good things about /e/.I've had a pretty good experience with Calyx. Helpful folks in the bridged telegram/matrix chat room, and everything works pretty well. The only thing I'm missing is in-app purchases. No way to do that with MicroG so far.#CalyxOS has a really good built-in firewall, so you can firewall your apps AND use your vpn of choice (Mullvad for me)....

@cnxThis is true. For batteries I do expect them to make it easy to replace them, at least, and ideally make tooling available and raise awareness for methods to extend the lifetime of your battery, such as setting a charge limit and not leaving it charging overnight.

@twizzay @benjaminhollon Yeah... I used to be a big OS X fan, but they started trying really hard to turn it into iOS, and now that their hardware is all soldered and glued together I don't want to buy it even if it is fast. :( Oh well. No point feeling nostalgic about a company's values I suppose. They tend to only have principles when it suits them.

@RL_Dane @twizzay @sotolfRight???Even better was the timing:- My media literacy class had a project where everyone had to give up their smartphones for several weeks- I'd only that week decided with my parents that I'd receive a phone- I negotiated an alternate project where I'd be learning how to use a smartphone responsibly instead of "learning" what it's like not to have one. ;)

@RL_Dane GSM incl. GPRS is still supported by all mobile networks I know. Your carrier may choose to block your access, but there is no technical reason for it.Many remote IoT connections like vending machines, some public transport displays, and gazillions of remote sensing equipment still use GPRS as it's perfectly fine for the use case of sending a few bytes of data to home base.@sotolf @twizzay @benjaminhollon

       @fedops @sotolf @twizzay @benjaminhollonIn the U.S., they're already shutting down 3G this year. :(

@RL_Dane same here, but that doesn't include 2G. Otherwise your vending machines never get refilled. 😄I was actually surprised at the amount of 3G still running in Ireland. I've not seen any in continental (western) Europe in years. But then it is still a good technology in rural areas as cell sizes can be huge.@sotolf @twizzay @benjaminhollon

@fedops @sotolf @twizzay @benjaminhollonJust checked, and it seems that all of the major U.S. networks have shuttered 2G (and 3G).Sadness."carriers have limited spectrum available for expansion," yadda yadda. It's becoming impossible to use a mobile phone without being tracked.

@benjaminhollon @fedops @RL_Dane @sotolf I actually think its the combination of both of you and the fact that the OP in this thread was so popular that has made this so long. :at_jakeWink:
