Hubs and I finally put up our Xmas tree it only took around 30 min. I will gleefully cite this post next year when he grumbles about doing it. I'm also really looking forward to getting a UVic-themed ornament when the bookstore opens up again.I'm so glad that I have so much to celebrate for this winter holiday season.

@Greenseer @msquebanh Speaking as a U.S. ex-patriate (who is still a native-born citizen), it's really difficult for us to feel like we have any say in what our federal government does thanks to outdated systems like the electoral college. I'm also not terribly fond of how many political and judicial decisions are tied to organized religion, of any kind.

@msquebanh @Ricardus Okay, went through the archive and yes, I think I remember you now. I'm sorry I forgot, but in my defense, I think I was just surprised to see you on this discussion?

My spouse has been running Sandwich.Net and the associated IRC server since 1997. There are only a few times where he has had to deny service due to a violation of the Terms of Service. When we talk about operational procedures, my role as project manager and senior customer support representative is to give him the advice he needs to feel comfortable in how he conveys this kind of denial to the person. 1/

Yesterday, he denied service to someone who he felt in his "reasonable inference, [would intend] to harass, intimidate, threaten, or promote hatred against an individual or group". It's not a lot and surely the former customer will find somewhere else where they get services because of course other service providers may be okay with that kind of thing. But not Sandwich.Net. 2/2

@sullybiker Thank you for the kind words and the empathy. You have mine for having dealt with motorsports-heads. I am trying to imagine the kind of drama that goes on in that community, but I'm not sure what that could be other than some fans saying their favourite racing team/driver/car was better than other fans'.

Hello #canada! I live in BC, and I'm looking to buy more locally-made or sourced goods. What are your favourite Canadian-made brands, what do they make, and why do you like them? Boosts appreciated.

A hit! A palpable hit, and something actually is going right for human digital artists in their fight against AI "artists" potentially taking their jobs. Let's hope other courts worldwide follow on this trend:https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-appeals-court-rejects-copyrights-ai-generated-art-lacking-human-creator-2025-03-18#mastodonart

I have a strange #TTRPG etiquette question. In a system like the Suikoden or Daggerheart ones, players can take a risk and agree to attack at the same time. With mobile phones being a thing now, is it considered rude to be texting your tag-team partner to plan out what the special maneuvers will be?(Also, what was the first system to introduce that mechanic as a Rule?)

@yora The situation I was thinking of is if PC 1 is talking to the GM about what they want to do individually and PC 2 wants to do a tag-team move with PC 3, it might save time to have that discussion at the same time as when the PC 1 is resolving their actions. But if they do it out loud, it introduces a complication of there being crosstalk.1/

@yora This could also be a handy thing for groups where the amount of time for gaming is limited or if they are on a countdown timer (like what can happen in Daggerheart).2/End

Back when I had a Twitter account, I actually had two of them. I had one for my blog where I put geek-themed stuff; I then cross-promoted the posts on my personal account. When I switched to Mastodon and stopped looking at Facebook, I thought I would go to just having one social media account. However, my spouse has been advising for socialbc.org, and he mentioned that they were looking for some people to be on their board of directors.1/

As much as I actually do enjoy working part time for my spouse doing operations and project management work for Sandwich.net, I *did* go to grad school, I *did* get a Masters in Community Development, and I *do* still want to be involved in doing more of the work of helping to build and foster safer communities for everyone.Doing the Community Advisory Assembly for New Westminster's a start, and I hope that we do a lot of good work together for the next year and if I'm lucky, a 2nd term.2/

One of the requirements of being a voting member of the org is to have donated at least $20.00 to the nonprofit; I was very happy to do so. I'm also hoping to land a board position with them because I would love to be a part of creating a Mastodon server for folks who live in British Columbia (or have very strong ties to BC).Which means that I think I'll be moving more of my structured posts about community development to my new server.3/

I'll still be posting here, but I think that going forward, if I do write more than 500 characters about something that people I follow here have said, I'm likely to respond from that account. You don't need to, but you can follow my new profile here: https://socialbc.ca/@trishalynnThanks for listening.4/End
