@mike nothing stops users from following people on other instances, but we've already established that the federated timeline would be unusable and people -tend- to stick to their own instance. they're not required to, but it's de facto true.remember, the goal is not "following katy perry." the goal is "getting katy perry to see your message." that becomes much harder, esp. since katy isn't your only influencer target.the fediverse cripples social media marketing. which isn't a bad thing.

@mike remember, i'm not talking about DMing @katyperry and being like "hey boost my shopify"i'm talking about katy perry seeing one of her trusted friends boost your shopify. because one of their trusted friends boosted it.and the only way that trusted friend will ever see your shopify is if they're on your instance.

Tech is already a niche; people who have ever looked at a kernel is a niche niche; and people who can patch it are one in a million.If you're gonna preach activism, this is literally your job. Of the three people in the world who know/care/can fix it, the other two aren't on fosstodon complaining about it.
