I feel the training video my employer subjects me too in case of active shooter its inappropriate and distressing. It includes a shotgun blast and visible blood splatter. In the opening minute.Or am I being overly sensitive here?

"Maybe if I schedule my oil change at 8 am I will get in and out quicker." Is what I told myself. *sigh*

Happy Birthday @gnome I *think* the first time I encountered Gnome was when I first discovered my local best buy had started carrying retail copies of Redhat Linux. Maybe around Redhat 6.0. ( I have a strong memory of this cover art here. )Wiki tells me that was by happenstance the first time Redhat shipped Gnome by default. So, a first for both of us.

@solderpunk I mostly remember how scarry it was to configure XFree86 in those days; mostly because I was easily freaked out about the CRT refresh rate warnings and how they could blowup you unspecified models of monitors.

@solderpunk That and how basically the market was flooded with soft modems with poor linux kernel support in those days. Lots of memories of being a green linux user teenager, frustrated as hell that I had to compile drivers or kernels to get dialup working.

@solderpunk At some point when both me and my sister were teenagers ( around 16 and 13 respectively ), my parents finally installed a second phone line. And then a year or two later coming back from college during the summer. Still with no broadband in sight, both me and my sister fighting for dialup time. Her on an eMac and me on some sort of Dell ( probably running Gentoo ?)

@solderpunk I think I arranged for one machine to be the primary internet device, and had the other set to "dial" into a bluetooth 1.0 serial connection into the other to share a god damn 56k dialup connection.

@solderpunk Setup a webserver and a cgi script on the "primary" machine, so the other person could trigger a dial if needed.

Google: We're depreciating FTP because it doesn't support encryption.Me: Fine, but where is your SFTP or FTPS support?

Lots of cute Japanese developed videogames feature the trope of having you wash up on shore after a shipwreck. But cute minecraft inspired 'Dragon Quest Builders 2' features CORPSES washed up with you and the ship debris. WTF?

@ParadeGrotesque @henrikjohansen Just going to add a second voice that #FreeBSD really obviously gives a lot of love to their ZFS support and goes out of their way to make sure its well integrated and production ready.Like it's really kinda become THEIR big showcase feature post Solaris.

@wezm It's snappy. It *feels* like BeOS if you ever ran that before. The whole thing is light and responsive. It has a way of letting the OS continue to feel responsive and snappy even if an app has run away with the rest of the CPU.It's native webkit based browser chokes on anything too complex though. They have Otter Browser available and it's quite a bit better. They could still benefit from Firefox. But I could get a lot done in Otter Browser I think.

Well Richard Stallman, founder of free software and the GNU project is going around defending MIT professors who participating the Epstein sex assault ring; from student protestors. I think it's important when people, even leaders in your community do this sort of thing; that they are criticized. Honestly, it pains me to say it, but free software has to be bigger than richard stallmen. Its time, probably past time for him to step down.https://medium.com/@selamie/remove-richard-stallman-fec6ec210794

@tomasino I've known the former for some time honestly. His political notes on that have always been close to disturbing if not actually disturbing honestly.I feel ashamed for giving him so much of a pass, personally on that claptrap now.The problem with this, is the message it sends to the community. It would be OK if he was an idiot on say music, or art-history. But this speaks to and echoes pains that volunteers in his own community have to grapple with.

@liaizon it's probably necessary and a bit unfortunate to point out he isn't careless with his words. He is very deliberate.Stallman is very *particular* about language he picks all of his words very carefully. Often even insisting on a particular vocabulary to keep ideas and words framed correctly. What he is saying is no accident. It is entirely intentional.

Its suddenly occurred to me how ive been tripping over backwards for years to try and always call linux by stallman's preferred gnu/linux monicker but he wont use 'they' as someone's preferred pronoun. That's fucked up when you think about it.

@ultem I came to the conclusion that I should use whatever pronoun is requested. Because being nice is most important.
