@foone Is that enough to solve it, since you have the check digit?

If your analysis of US voter trends doesn't include the absolutely incredible amount of voter suppression in US elections then it is a bad analysis

Hey – there's an error widely made after Brexit that I see a lot of Americans starting to make. Some bad economic stuff is starting to happen to people who voted the wrong way.The deep temptation is to say "we told you so, you dumb fucks, I have zero sympathy".OK, yeah, some of these people are racists. No sympathy. But!Millions of them are (let's be frank) low-education, low-information voters who thought they were voting for cheaper groceries. You will need them. Don't push them away.

Don't confuse fascists who enthusiastically voted for fascism with people who are a bit dim and didn't know what they were voting for. That is two very different kinds of people."But we warned them!" They didn't hear it."We told them every day!" Yeah, in some online bubble where you are and they are not.And guess what – people who voted for a better economic situation and don't get it tend to get angry.Bring them into the tent as much as you can instead of lashing out at them.

(Don't call them dim or uneducated either when you do it. I'm putting it directly to you here because they are, let's face it, pretty unlikely to be reading.)

The popularity of the "leopards eating faces" sort of stuff is a bad sign when this has only barely started to happen. You can be smug for four years or you can build a resistance. Those two things pull in different directions.

Decentralised social media site Bluesky has gone down under the load of new users. Not to worry, I'll just use one of the other decentralised instances. One of the many wonders of decentralisation. ... What do you mean, there aren't any?... If a central server goes down, I can't get onto this oh-so-decentralised network?I guess this must just be how decentralisation works!

@foone My batch is still way better than my bash – learned it in DOS as an actual child. This turns out to be a less universal experience than I once assumed

@tehstu @josephcox I'm pretty critical of Bluesky (see my timeline) but I don't see why this would be any harder or slower to do from Mastodon/fedi

Who are the people who thought that Mark Zuckerberg was OK until now but today he's really crossed a line?I'm seeing a lot of it and come on. It's been very clear who he is for a long, long time. They made a whole movie about it literally 15 years ago.

Side note: annoy your friends by always (well, this year) referring to the year 2010 as "15 years ago"

People on Mastodon talk a lot about moving to the open source alternative to everything, but the real imperative now is to shift to the non-US-hosted alternative to everything. Sometimes this overlaps but right now, geography should be the priority.

@loke I have sort of the opposite side of this in that I'm learning Swedish and don't really know where to use "dygn", so just use "dagar" everywhere, which is usually correct but not always. Your explanation here helped a bit but I'm still not sure when this (needing to refer to a 24-hour period) would come up?

@loke Yeah that makes sense! For the resort case in English I would probably just say "3 nights" and leave the days out of it, but yeah for that uploading one I guess I would say "24 hours". So it covers both of those phrases

@neobrain @ariadne Yes how could anyone possibly object to the 100 stupid AI buttons appearing all over all software. Just turn them all off. Individually.

@stux The problem is that this idea will be used to oppose all solar installations in fields until, what, every car park in the world has one?

@mcc I think I've unfollowed most people who post Substack links. If I somehow got to this then I'd block whoever linked me there

The US Army parade sponsored by Coinbase really is like those "corporate dystopia" movies that always felt so satirically over-the-top

@GossiTheDog Whoever could have predicted that downloading 10GB of third party code from 1,000 different people to do simple tasks would end up this way

@foone I feel like this could work (as well as being neat) as a real-life captcha if it showed you the manual page next to it as a slightly crusty scan? No idea if bots could defeat it but AI is kind of bad at counting like "fifth letter of the word" type stuff
