@shacker @danhon Exactly. If X shares their Contacts without permission of those people, they are violating their privacy. We have been programmed to think of 'our' Contacts as 'our' data by the permission structure on phones, but it is other people's data too.#PrivacyIsSocialGood habit is to add as few people as possible to your Contacts

@shacker @danhon Isn't that buying into the belief system they want? Contacts as total record is *convenient* but it isn't necessary and may be selfish, or at least embodying individualist values.By calling or messaging some person or organization, I don't give them permission to keep a permanent record of my name and number. We give up #DigitalRights without a moment's thought when we drink the Koolaid of convenience.

@webmink Wouldn't it be a good idea to apply that principle to **all** alleged financial services? Derivatives? LDIs? All sorts of fancy 'products' out there which are just bets on future market behaviour. What's the difference?

@shacker @danhon I am going to need to think about this much harder, but I suspect the shift from paper to digital phonebooks is not innocent. My convenience becomes your risk in a digital world.Of course we need to know how to contact people who want us to contact them. My point was about how we store than information, how long we keep it, and who owns it.

We have spotted quite a few students using generative AI in their essays this summer and applied standard academic misconduct proceedings, though in most cases the work was so bad they would've failed anyway.Today I learned of one whose use was sufficiently extensive that they will fail their degree.I am wondering if this is *the first time a student has failed a whole degree for using AI*? @hyde @aral I have Pixel 5 with @GrapheneOS and love it.Use Shelter to box in those apps which cannot work without (sandboxed) Play Services. Which also allows me to run two VPNs with different locations.

@neil @revk If I read the bill correctly, *email* is not a regulated service, ever. Full exemption. Doesn't that seem rather stupid if you are trying to stop bad actors? There are loads of e2ee email services already and will be more as soon as bill passes. They can even advertise as ways to get around #OSB

@publictorsten What is so shocking about this is *not* that the genAI did exactly what it is designed to do, namely create teh most likely looking image, but that the person who used it switched off their brain at the sight of the words 'AI'.Before AI, if a social media person had had to do a major edit of a photo which left them deciding 'bra or no bra', they would have asked the sitter. Now they use genAI to be 'more productive', they stop doing their own job properly.

I was renewing an #Insurance policy this morning and they said they no longer accept @protonprivacy emails addresses because 'they are associated with fraud'. WTAF?They used my #Protonmail address happily for 3 years. Where has this change come from? Today someone I know slightly was sentenced to 30 months in prison, and sent to a high security facility. Their crime was disrupting traffic - they and others climbed a gantry on the M25, the major orbital round London, to drop banners protesting at government inaction on climate change. If a young woman studying for a PhD had been treated like this for nonviolent protest in, say, Iran or China, how would it be reported by our press?#Law is about #power not #justice
