$ ncal -bh | receipt$ cowsay Receipt printers rule | receiptI have a good reason for doing this, and I don't have anything more important I should be working on.

The reason reason I have this printer set up is for printing the shopping list. Printing from bash is a fun side effect of having a printer on MQTT.When you hit the button it publishes a message. A service on the server polls #grocy for the current shopping list and publishes it out onto the print topic.

In a few days the parts for my new computer will arrive. I've been running #linux (#debian and #ubuntu) on my servers and laptops for 20 years, but this'll be the first time I've had it on my primary desktop. My main concern is game compatibility. I have a Steam Deck, and most stuff runs just fine, but I'm a bit leery of going for one of the fashionable "gamer" distros #bazzite et al). I'm thinking of starting with Mint and testing the waters.Any advice?

As per tradition a visit to #ikea results in too many meatbol and also a small pile of smart home bits. All of them integrating via #zigbee2mqtt to #homeassistant with no cloud involved.I'm not sure if I can pair the TIMMERFLOTTE without new firmware in my #zigbee dongle. Experimentation required.#hass

Good god. Windows 11 has so much latency. From pressing win+e to showing a populated file explorer takes almost 1.5 seconds. Notepad takes about the same. This is so shit. It's going to take a long while for this to feel normal.I need to hassle IT to let us run baremetal #linux on our work machines.#gripe #win11 #windows

As administrator of howse.social, I would like to issue an apology and explanation for this afternoon's outage.A camera was added to the NVR running on the decade-old e-waste that also hosts this instance. 3 hours later the PSU completely died. No signs of life at all. Fortunately I had a spare ATX PSU handy and was able to get it running again. Hardware to replace this ancient Dell T110 tower was ordered yesterday. The root cause could be load- or sulk-related. Investigations continue.

That panic when your random shuffle throws up the track before Champagne Supernova and you have to find the window in time to make a smooth transition. This song evokes memory of Pokémon Red. I never owned a gameboy, so I had to play it emulated.#oasis #music

Eldest uses autodesk inventor for #cad at school. I intensely dislike this early indoctrination into proprietary software, so on his school holidays I have started teaching him #openscad. Here's his first efforts: A pencil holder. He's learned about basic primitives and the translation, rotation and difference operators. He's picking it up very quickly, proud dad. I also had an excuse to teach him about the right hand rule.#foss

Ran out of egg halfway through making panko-crusted chicken breast for dinner last night. Switched to hommus loosened with a bit of olive oil. Worked perfectly, tasted great. #cooking

Quick! I found a new feature of windows 11 to shout at!Right click on a window's task bar entry. The context menu doesn't pop up at your cursor. You know, where context menus normally pop up so you can select something from the menu with minimal cursor movement. Instead the menu appears above the _centre of that group of tabs_.Just insane.

Thing #83 I appreciate after switching from windows to linux on my desktop: When I tell my computer to shut down, it shuts down.I don't get a warning prompt informing me I have a file explorer window open. I cannot imagine a rational justification for that feature.

@Rom13AncapHypoc Many moons ago I was fortunate to have a patient and knowledgeable colleague to chaperone me through the start of my linux journey. After I got my server up and running I asked them "I went with ext2 for the main drive. How often do I need to defrag?"They just laughed at me.

@Rom13AncapHypoc Haha! The key fact: EXT2 arranges data on the drive in a way that means defragmentation is unnecessary.

I'm doing some mucking about with threads in #freecad. I had steeled myself for some hardcore learning, installation of plugins and whatnot.Nope, just a few clicks to make a rough copy of this weird unthread for a bung on our sailboat. Good stuff. I have a few versions printing now to see which one fits best. And no, the printed bung won't be used below the waterline. It's for securing a hatch lid.#foss #cad
