The hottest thing in local Seattle politics is the city's war on Saint Rat / Hot Rat Summer, a mosaic that someone put up (without permission) on the old pumphouse in Cal Anderson Park last year. Recently, city workers have been painting over the mosaic, and good citizens have been cleaning off the mosaic to restore it when they do so. It is a fierce battle, and one I hope the citizens win. We must fight for Hot Rat Summer.

I still hate cryptocurrency culture, but I’m going to keep beating the drum that we need to look at strategies for alternate currencies when payment processors control what we can and cannot see and do. Angry queer disillusioned tech people have some power here. If we can do it without burning the planet, please let’s do it.

One of the things that pisses me off most about today's "AI" hype is that I grew up loving symbolic AI. That's the kind of AI that flourished before a big "AI Winter" killed off funding and research. It was based on the idea that you could fill a computer with facts, rules about how to operate on those facts, and build expert systems that could reason about things like a human would. It was promising! But all that's out the window now, LLMs sucked all the air out of the room.

Watching a cartoon from 1989 that I loved as a kid and have fond memories of, and suddenly:WHAM!Outrageous over the top Asian stereotypes. Thick accents, buck teeth, narrow eyes behind glasses, all look alike, bowing in unison. Yikes, uncomfortable as hell.I know "it was a different time", etc., but damn. It's ironic that you ABSOLUTELY COULD NOT get away with this today, but blatant, all-out, naked white supremacy gets you a podcast and a big following now.

Ever wonder why the "vi" editor uses H, J, K, and L keys for cursor navigation, and why Unix shells traditionally use "~" as an alias for the home directory? The ADM-3A terminal was a very popular and inexpensive Unix terminal in the 1970s. Notice where the arrow keys are, and where the "~" key is? It influenced a lot!

Building my workbench in America with American tools and American lumber and American screws has reminded me how much I loathe US customary units, and much I long for everything being metric. They make these ridiculously expensive construction calculators because everyone fucking hates trying to figure out what 38 3/4” divided by four is, or how many square inches 2’ x 19 1/2” is.

We were in the process of going Metric in the 1970s. You know who killed it? That’s right: Ronald Reagan(This is a gross oversimplification, but it’s not *wrong* either)

I’m looking for some advice. I’m going to be insulating and drywalling our garage, but the electrical panels are a problem area. As you can see, the generator subpanel is deeper than the main panel and sticks out quite a way. I’m going to move the two sockets that are between them, but I’m not sure what the cleanest solution is for this. I was thinking of framing out a box around them and adding cabinet doors for access, I think that is allowed by code. What would you do?

Score! I found a porno mag stuffed into the rafters while I was prepping for insulation. Great place to hide it from your wife, I guess.

If you haven’t seen it yet, I encourage you to watch Benn Jordan’s latest video about Flock cameras, in association with 404 Media, and share it with people who might not know about Flock. It’s only 11 minutes long. If you have access to city council meetings where they might be considering Flock, go to them.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vU1-uiUlHTo

It is not lost on me that the “think of the children!!” movement that’s ruining literally everything right now is spearheaded by people who either fuck 14 year olds or hang out with people who fuck 14 year olds. It‘s never about the kids. They just want to control you, that’s it.

Say it with me, and internalize it: “Statistically likely text is not intelligence!”If you’re more of a nerd you can replace “text” with “tokens”, same thing.Fuck, it’s so easy for our brains to trick us into seeing meaning when there is no meaning.

The LLM’s model has ingested every piece of text that has ever been on the Internet and built a huge matrix of weights of what strings of words are related to other strings of words. Then it uses this to generate new strings of words that are very statistically likely. It looks like magic, and it’s technologically very spiffy, but I assure you it’s just a combo of math and our own brains going “wow!”

In Canada, engineers are presented with iron rings that were once apocryphally made out of metal from a failed bridge, as a reminder of the solemn duty to their work. I’m convinced CS graduates should have to wear rings made out of a Therac-25.
