One guy a quarter of a century ago trying unsuccessfully to use a shoe bomb and they’re still x-raying shoes at airports (X-rays can’t see explosives).Hundreds of school shootings and nothing ever happens at all.

Would love to attend a Vintage Computing Festival.Alas, there's no masking requirement even in the middle of COVID surges; making it way to risky as my wife is severely immunocomprised (and I to a lesser extend). The community is talking a big talk about being inclusive, but it's really not.And yes, it's entirely doable to run events with mandatory masking, like XOXOFest did last month.

I don’t know why the organizers don’t put their foot down to make these events and gatherings more accessible. Is it apathy?Maybe their politics?Actively hating disabled people?Being afraid that asshole speakers will cancel their appearance?I just don’t understand it.

The problem with the #retrocomputing community isn’t that there’s actively awful people in it (e.g. 8-bit guy or the people doing afterparties at Hooters); the problem is that the “not awful” people keep ignoring it, pretend everything is fine and absolutely don’t lift a finger to change anything.

Got called “intolerant” by someone in the retrocomputing community because I find it unacceptable to have someone in the community who is laughing about mothers grieving about their child’s brains being splattered on their classroom wall by a school shooter. That’s great.

Seriously seeing behavior like this and thinking “I need to defend this person who I’ve never met and doesn’t know I exist” is pathological behavior.Get some help.

The biggest problem with “AI” is probably that it’s used as label for two completely different things:1. Specialized neural networks trained to do highly specific tasks (e.g. cancer screening) which often work reasonably well as a tool to support human experts2. Generative AI which thoroughly produces the most mid bullshit It doesn’t help that neither are intelligent in any way, they’re both statistical pattern matching.

“But LLMs are good at generating things! And good at summarizing!”No, they really aren’t. The generated texts are literally always quite bad, often have omissions or outright errors or miss important points or fail in other ways.

This isn’t something that can be just talked away and it affects all such systems regardless of who implements them. This actively causes harm to people—and it’s inherent in these systems and can’t be fixed. They’re purely autocompleters based on statistics, and do not have intelligence or domain knowledge or an awareness of harm they cause.

I don’t understand why this has to be said so often, including to otherwise rational people. You cannot anthropomorphize a calculator. Even if it can calculate billions of digits.

Apparently what we’ve been doing until about 2010 (copy files to a server and then switching prod to this new directory to deploy) is now a hipster web dev thing that’s called “buildless”
