@wjmaggos @revolucianaI wonder if the limit is to help limit total users on that instance to more manageable levels for moderation and server management. Journalists tend to produce a lot of content, and the responsibility of managing it likewise will be high. I do hope bigger media companies will make their own instances for all their employed journalists. That will help spread the moderation out better.

@atomicpoetThe problem is there's all these new users coming over (from Twitter, yes, but also Facebook and other places because Mastodon is going viral), but not many people who have the means and time to run their own instance. I say this as someone coming from a new instance with 8 users whipped up a week ago. Running and moderating a server well is a commitment, especially if there is any intent to open it to more than just trusted friends and family.

@sullybiker @jerryI think it's taking a while for it to sink in that the Fediverse isn't one giant megacorp.

@parkermolloy I guess the powers that be have spoken, and it's clear where some people's priorities lie. Inaction can be bad, but action against minority dissent is far worse. I am sorry to see you've had to move.

@parker @adamdavidsonFailure to handle anti-trans content is a reason many instances are blocked. The choices are to convince the offending user to stop (not necessarily good enough since said user often displays anti-trans content elsewhere in public), get said user off the instance, or block the instance. Instances that welcome trans people will act very quickly to protect their users, but at least some will consider unblocking if the issue is resolved.

@jsit @adamdavidson @adminNot really true. I am watching moderators in action and have seen 2 server blocks removed from multiple servers because the concerning issues were resolved, just in the past 2 weeks. I also see many moderators taking their time and consider the information available before deciding whether or not to mute or fully block an instance. @jerry explains his reasoning here.https://blog.infosec.exchange/2022/11/20/an-update-on-journa-host/The hard part is earning that trust back will take time, but that is life.

@GargronThank you for your honesty. This sort of transparency is not something we would get on Twitter or Facebook. The moderators are human, and thus can make mistakes. My hope we we can all learn to be better, so that these sorts of mistakes, which inevitably hit minorities hardest, don't happen again.
