@jeff You can give it a try with your instance and let us know how it works?

Does anyone in the #MastoAdmin world know of any resources that talk about the implementation and implications of putting your instance into AUTHORIZED_FETCH or “secure” mode?Reading the limited official documentation it sounds like instead of your instances posts and content being cached on other instances it forces everything to be fetched direct from your instance? https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/config/#authorized_fetchThat section could really use a rewrite to be more clear.

Just passed 1 TB of S3 block storage on #DEFCON.social, we are adding around 10-15 Gigs a day depending on how active the federated timeline is.At some point we'll have to prune that, but for the rest of this year we should be fine. The goal is that local user content sticks around forever and federated stuff gets purged over time.#FediAdmin

I try to live like a local as much as possible in Singapore, and one thing the bugged me was The mystery of #Singapore Battery Pricing. You can pay the full price of $7.5 at a grocery store for 4 AA, or you can pay $5.10 at an electronics store, or $3 at a corner FixIt shop. What’s going on here? Is the price mark up really that high? Did someone smuggle in counterfeit batteries?Flipping over the least expensive battery package and reading the fine print reveals the secret: Differential pricing between Singapore and Malaysia!

@jeff Yep super excited for it. Once the NAS companies switch to it (Synology, etc.) that will be a sign we can start building v2 torrents only.I’m planning to go v2 only starting 2024 to allow enough time for those who care about torrenting to have upgraded.

Finally #DEFCON.social has been listed under the "Tech" section of JoinMastodon when you sign up using a mobile app.Let's see if that changes the trajectory of our registrations. 🤞

Has any #MastoAdmin figured out a way to toggle the account type to "Bot" without having to manually fiddle with the DataBase? A command line utility would even be preferable. There are some accounts that act like bots and I'd like to set them that way, but it looks like the only way that happens is if a user self selects "Bot" at initial account creation.

The difference going from 10 to 11 million accounts only translated into a _reduction_ of new users sign up rate and active accounts on #defcon.social I'm guessing a couple things might be going on at the same time and would love some help in figuring it out.- There are a lot of Bot accounts being created. I saw a #MastoAdmin #FediBlock post about one instance creating 46k accounts in one day. <- How to investigate this?- The bulk of new accounts are going to mastodon.social and the smaller instances contract as it grows. <- Maybe? But according to instances.social they have grown from about 850k users to 1M users (+150k) while total accounts have gone from 10->11M- People creating multiple backup accounts and then not using them. <- I don't think this is wide spread or we would see a lot of new user accounts created but low activity. What I see is lower account creation than Nov / Dec.Links or ideas for researching beyond total # of instances / users?

@Tattie Part of the CoC includes “We do not condone harassment against any participant, for any reason. Harassment includes deliberate intimidation and targeting individuals in a manner that makes them feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, or afraid.” Bigotry clearly falls under that description. #FediBlock

FYI #OpenSSL is marking it as a low severity, we are updating all systems of ours that an attacker may be able to cause a connection to a malicious server. Mail servers, Mastodon servers, etc. come to mind.

With all the talk about Meta P92, privacy, and related concerns has any #MastoAdmin found or written a guide on what actually happens when an instance enables “Authorized Fetch” (Secure mode)?EDIT:I’ve found this conversation to help my understanding:https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/18353I’m curious if you really want to box out other instances if this would be required. I know there are performance impacts but still have no good documentation. If nothing is found then #DEFCON.social will create a test server and start experimenting after #DEFCON31
